HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (6-13 overall, 2-7 GLIAC) split day one of the Midwest Region Crossover on Friday, falling to Illinois Springfield in four sets before sweeping Upper Iowa in three for the nightcap.

"It was a very nice finish to our opening day at the Crossover. We played a complete match against a very good opponent in Upper Iowa. Consistency is key to any successes we have and I feel like we are getting closer to understanding that."
MATCH ONE vs. ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD (L, 1-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED (22-25, 21-25, -19, 12-25)
- The first set was one of runs as UIS opened with a 6-3 spurt, WSU responded with six-straight points and the Prairie Stars used a 7-2 burst to go up by two, 13-11.
- Following two more ties at 13-13 and 14-14, Illinois Springfield took over the rest of the stanza for a 1-0 match advantage.
- Wayne State was ahead by four to begin the second period, 10-6 and 11-7, and held a three-point buffer 25 total points in, 14-11.
- Illinois Springfield then punched back with 11 of the proceeding 13 scores to lead by six, 22-16.
- The Warriors clawed back within three, 24-21, before the Prairie Stars tallied the next point to seal the set.
- WSU was impressive in the third with a hitting percentage of .406 thanks to 17 kills and only four errors on 32 total attacks.
- In that stanza, Wayne State finished the scoring with nine of the final 11 points.
- UIS hit .600 in the fourth set with 13 kills and only one error on 20 swings.

- Both teams registered 53 kills, but the Prairie Stars had 12 service aces to the Warriors' four.
MATCH TWO vs. UPPER IOWA (W, 3-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED (-20, -18, -20)
- Wayne State came out red hot scoring 14 of the match's first 18 points.
- After that, thanks to a 10-3 run, the closest Upper Iowa could get was three, 22-19.
- The second set was closer at the start with three ties in the first 24 total points scored.
- Once it was 12-12, that 12th point for the Warriors started an 8-1 run that put them up six, 19-13.
- The Peacocks rattled off four points in a row of their own to cut the deficit to two, 19-17.
- WSU took care of the rest, though, with a 6-1 burst to seal the stanza and a 2-0 match advantage.
- It was more of the same back-and-forth play to kick off the third, including nine deadlocks and seven lead changes in the first 22 total scores.
- Once it was 11-11, Wayne State scored nine of the next 11 points for a seven-point lead, 20-13.
- Upper Iowa pulled with two at 20-18 and 22-20, but never closer.
