Women's Cross Country Finishes Ninth at Lewis Crossover Invite

The Warriors had eight runners compete on Saturday.

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The Wayne State University women's cross country squad opened the month of October by notching a ninth-place team effort in the 6K race at the Lewis Crossover Invite on Saturday at the Lewis Cross Country Course.

Lewis University served as the hosts, and the eighth running of the crossover brought some of the best Division II programs to Romeoville.  Of the 34 schools running between the men and women's events, the Warriors were one of 10 nationally ranked teams, with six more schools appearing in their respective regional rankings.

Within the Midwest Region, seven of the top 10 teams were in the six-kilometer race -- Grand Valley State (also the No. 1 program in the nation), Saginaw Valley State, Lewis, Walsh, Wayne State, Michigan Tech, and Parkside.  Six of the eight regional divisions were represented on Saturday.

There were 33 women's teams at the event, which is one of the largest D2 cross country meets in the nation.  WSU, the No. 23-ranked program in the country, finished with 311 points.  The top 10 programs in the final order were Colorado School of Mines (49 points), Grand Valley State (98), Lewis (131), Winona State (137), Colorado Christian (196), Western Washington (198), Biola (Calif.) (200), Fort Lewis (243), Wayne State (311), and Saginaw Valley State (331).

Wayne State was the second-highest finishing GLIAC school of the nine squads at Lewis, trailing behind only GVSU, the No. 1-ranked school in Division II entering the day.

Individually, Lindsay Cunningham from Winona State won the 6K with an overall time of 20:06.80.  317 runners posted a finishing time.  Of the eight WSU runners, Reagan Justice (Canton, Mich. / Salem) was the top finisher.  The junior came home 29th with a mark of 21:59.10.  She has been the highest-placing Warrior in three of four completed events this fall.

Briana Vojinov (Brownstown, Mich. / Woodhaven) crossed the line 37th with a time of 22:13.90.  Putting together a strong run was Katherine Ray (Novi, Mich. / Novi), as she was the third-best member of the Green and Gold on Saturday.  Ray posted a time of 22:46.90 (75th spot), her best mark in a 6K race this year.

In 84th was Anna O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) with a mark of 22:54.20, while in 101st was Thailyia Christensen (Flushing, Mich. / Flushing).  The redshirt senior recorded a 23:01.70.

The final three competing Warriors were Robin Bresolin (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova), Aubrey Migoski (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt), and Annalee Misch (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower).  Bresolin's 23:14.50 was enough for 120th, with Migoski's 23:15.30 right behind her in 121st.  Misch placed 141st with a time of 23:27.20.

FROM COACH LOFDAHL
"We had a poor start in the race and did not establish position, so that made things tough for the rest of the race.  For the most part, we did a good job of moving up and passing many people, but the hole was ultimately too big to dig out of.  We'll go back and train hard, and we'll be a lot better in championship season.  Katherine, Robin, and Aubrey closed well and were bright spots for us today."

UP NEXT
Wayne State will return to Michigan for its final regular season meet of 2023, which is the Muskegon Jayhawk Invitational on Saturday, October 14.  The women's event will be a 5K and begin at 2:15 p.m. from the University Park Golf Course in Muskegon.
