Allen Named GLIAC Cross Country Men's Athlete of the Week for Second Time This Season

The graduate student finished third overall at the Lewis Crossover Invite last Saturday.

DETROIT -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) released its weekly cross country awards on Monday, and Wayne State University men's cross country athlete Ransom Allen (Ithaca, Mich. / Ithaca) was named GLIAC Men's Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.

The graduate student continued his impressive season with a third-place overall finish at the Lewis Crossover Invite on Saturday, October 7.  It was the eighth crossover invitational hosted by the Flyers of Lewis University.  The performance came at an event that routinely attracts some of the biggest Division II cross country programs in the nation.  Of the 31 teams representing six of the eight regions, nine programs were nationally ranked and an additional six teams were regionally ranked -- a total of 337 runners.  Allen's strong run earned him a podium position in the sizable field.

His time of 23:55.80 for the eight-kilometer race helped the Warriors to an eighth-place finish in Romeoville with 279 points.  WSU, the No. 15-ranked squad in the country entering last weekend, was the highest-finishing GLIAC school in the men's competition.  They placed better than six other conference foes.

Allen has now finished in the top three in all three meets that he has competed in this season. including two of the largest meets in the country at the Roy Griak Invitational and Lewis Crossover.  The grad student won the overall event at the Griak Invitational for his fourth collegiate cross country triumph in his decorated career.

The recognition is just one of several that the Warrior has already collected this season.  It's the second time in 2023, and fourth time overall, that the WSU runner has been named GLIAC Cross Country Men's Athlete of the Week.  He also earned the honor for the week of September 25 this season, the week of October 24 in 2022, and for the week of September 14 in 2021.  Allen also received the Division II Men's National Athlete of the Week for his victory in Saint Paul, Minn. on September 22.

Allen and the rest of his Green and Gold teammates will return to Michigan for one more regular season meet this fall.  The Muskegon Jayhawk Invitational is the next event on the docket this Saturday, October 14.  The standard men's eight-kilometer race will begin at 1:15 p.m. from the University Park Golf Course in Muskegon.
