Volleyball Opens November with Trip to the U.P.

The Warriors are making their final road trip of the regular season.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (10-15 overall, 5-9 GLIAC) will make its final road trip of the 2023 regular season this week.  The Warriors will face the likes of Michigan Tech (11-14 overall, 7-7 GLIAC) on Friday at 5 p.m. and Northern Michigan (9-16 overall, 6-8 GLIAC) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT - OCT. 31 VS. SAGINAW VALLEY STATE (-13, -24, -15)
- Saginaw Valley State took the lead first and was up by two, 3-1, before Wayne State answered with 11 of the next 14 points for a six-point advantage, 12-6.
- From there until the end of the set, the Cardinals never got closer than five and the Warriors' lead ballooned to as big as 12.
- The second period was the closest as it saw a combined 12 ties and seven lead changes.
- The visitors deadlocked it for the 12th time at 23-23 before the home team rattled off three of the ensuing four scores.
- WSU opened the third stanza with a 5-0 spurt and never really looked back.
- SVSU cut the margin to four twice (5-1, 6-2), but the Warriors went out in front by as many as 10.
- Despite the second set being the closest, Wayne State hit the best in that period with a clip of .300.
- Saginaw Valley State also hit the ball wall in that stanza with an offensive output of .242.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES VS. THE CARDINALS
- Giroux, Wayne State's team leader in blocks, racked up a season-high six on Tuesday night.
- Andrews' 21 digs were two shy of her season-high 23 at Davenport on Sept. 29.

OCT. 21 VS. MICHIGAN TECH (-21, -18, 19-25, 21-25, -11)
- Just like Friday night, Wayne State came out of the gates hot taking the first two sets to go up 2-0 in the match.
- The Warriors hit .290 in the first on Saturday thanks to 15 kills and six errors on 31 total attacks.
- As good as they were in the opening stanza, they built on that by hitting .407 in the next period with 14 kills and only three errors on 27 swings.
- WSU trailed MTU by five to start, 18-13, before scoring 12 of the next 15 points to come back and win.
- In the second, the home team faced another deficit, this time it was 6-0.
- The Warriors responded with a 15-4 spurt to lead by five, 15-10.
- After that, the Huskies could never get closer than three, 15-12 and 16-13.
- Michigan Tech hit a match-best .371 in the third before a .303 clip in the fourth.
- With the Huskies carrying all of the momentum to the fifth, the Warriors punched back with a match-high .471 hitting percentage in the fifth.
- The fifth and final period was tied four times before Wayne State took the lead (6-5) for good.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES VS. THE HUSKIES
- Miller notched her fifth double-double of the season and first since Sept. 23.
- Dulgar reached a new career high for assists with 54, five more than her previous best.
- Four different Warriors racked up at least 11 kills.
- Giroux was excellent with 16 kills and only four errors on 27 attempts for a .444 hitting percentage.
- Uganski and Withun were both efficient as well with clips of .280 and .346, respectively.

OCT. 20 VS. NORTHERN MICHIGAN (-21, -19, -12)
- The beginning of the first set saw six ties and four lead changes in the first 16 total points before Northern Michigan was ahead by two, 9-7.
- Wayne State then began to get hot with five-straight points to lead by three, 12-9.
- The Wildcats' final advantage came at 14-13 before the Warriors took the lead for good at 16-15.
- Once the home team was up two, 17-15, the teams went back and forth seeing the visitors pull within one on six occasions.
- Wayne State then slammed the door with three-consecutive scores to win the period and go up 1-0 in the match.
- Early on in the second, Northern Michigan held a two-point lead 6-4, before Wayne State responded with a 6-1 run of its own.
- The away team eventually took the advantage back, 17-16, before the hosts again put the nail in the coffin with nine of the next 11 points.
- Aside from one deadlock at 1-1, the Warriors led the third set wire to wire.
