HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Embarking on its final road trip of the 2023 regular season, the Wayne State University volleyball team (10-16 overall, 5-10 GLIAC) was at Michigan Tech (12-14 overall, 8-7 GLIAC) on Friday night. The Warriors won sets three and four before falling to the Huskies in the fifth and deciding period.
HOW IT HAPPENED (19-25, 23-25, -23, -24, 11-15)
- Wayne State was ahead by one, 19-18, late in the first set before Michigan Tech scored six of the next seven points to go up 1-0 in the match.
- Despite dropping the period, the Warriors came out hot offensively with a .406 hitting percentage (16 kills, 3 errors, 32 total attacks).
- The Warriors tied up the second stanza for the 11th and final time at 23-23 before the Huskies sealed it with the next two scores.
- WSU trailed the third set by as many as nine (16-7, 18-9) before battling all the way back to a two-point advantage thanks to a 14-3 spurt.
- That set was the home team's best offensively at .313 (13 kills, 3 errors, 32 total attacks).
- The fourth period was another back-and-forth affair that saw 17 deadlocks and four lead changes.
- The 17th tie and fourth lead change happened back to back as Wayne State rattled off the final three points to send the match to a fifth set.
- The deciding stanza was knotted for a sixth instance at 10-10 before the hosts ended it with five of the ensuing six points.
- The Warriors hit a blistering .444 (11 kills, 3 errors, 18 total attacks) in the fifth, but surrendered four kills in that 5-1 run.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Giroux and Miller both had a night with hitting percentages of .333 and .308, respectively.
- Dulgar reached the 50-assist plateau for the third time this season and third time in her last five matches.
- Andrews' 24 digs are a new career high and her ninth outing with 20 or more this fall.
- Miller recorded her seventh double-double of the season and third in her last five contests.
- Smith came within one kill of a double-double and racked up a personal-best 14 digs.
ONE BIG THING
- Michigan Tech's Meg Raabe finished with 32 kills and only seven errors on 77 swings for a .325 hitting percentage.
