Women's Hoops Falls 72-62 at Lake Superior State

The Warriors were out-scored 44-27 in the second half.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (12-10 overall, 5-9 GLIAC) were stunned on the road at Lake Superior State (6-17 overall, 3-12 GLIAC) 72-62 inside the Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors scored the first points of the afternoon on a jump shot from redshirt senior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day). WSU and LSSU battled through a competitive 10 minutes, where neither team possessed an edge of more than three and the lead changed hands three times. Six of the 13 points scored by Wayne State in the frame were from senior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino), while freshman Hillary Griffin (Jackson, Mich. / Parma Western) chipped in three points on an old-fashioned three-point play.

Second Quarter
A five point run by the Warriors from the 7:17 to 6:31 mark in the quarter granted them an 18-16 advantage. Just before the timeout for media, the two squads exchanged three-pointers, with graduate student Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) tying the game at 21-21, before a triple from Gracey Metz put the Lakers ahead 24-21. WSU went on an 11-0 run heading into the halftime break, which gave the team a five-point cushion (35-28). Karasinski and sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) did strong work, with Karasinski collecting five points (a triple and a jumper) and Tripp registering six points, all on made lay-ups.

Third Quarter
Lake Superior State went through a drought of over six minutes without a field goal from the final 2:55 of the first half through the first 3:50 of the second half, with their only points coming on a pair of free throws by Mattison Rayman. However, the Warriors were unable to utilize it to their advantage, tallying only three points during the opening four minutes of the third. The Lakers eventually grabbed the lead back (41-40) while going on a 7-0 run of their own from 4:03 to 2:31. Wayne State regained the lead by the end of the quarter, and after 30 minutes of action, WSU held a slim three-point lead (45-43).

Fourth Quarter
The Lakers saved their best work for the final stanza, out-scoring the Warriors 29-17 in the final 10 minutes. A three-pointer from Margot Woughter put Lake Superior State ahead for good (50-47) with 6:55 remaining. Wayne State tried cutting into the deficit, but LSSU was able to score enough points to match the Warriors output. Woughter led the way for the Lakers in the charge, scoring 10 points in the final quarter, including a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. It was a strong finish for senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.), who posted six of her game's eight points in the final four minutes.
