Strong Finish For Women's Hoops Nets a 64-52 Win Over Davenport

The Warriors start the final regular season home weekend with a victory.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (13-10 overall, 6-9 GLIAC) handled visiting Davenport University (7-18 overall, 1-14 GLIAC) 64-52 on Thursday night at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The two squads combined for 21 points in the 10 minute span (11-10 DU).The first points of the contest were scored at the 1:22 mark, with sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) netting a lay-up. Davenport answered soon after with a triple from Mary Leidel to move ahead 3-2. These were the only two made baskets of the first 5:42. The Panthers went through a scoring drought of 5:25 from the 8:06 mark to the 2:40 mark of the stanza, but retained the edge after 10 minutes, DU shot 4-of-16 (25 percent) from the floor, while WSU shot 3-of-16 (19 percent) from the field in the quarter.

Second Quarter
The Warriors grabbed a 12-11 lead early on courtesy of redshirt senior Maxine Moore's (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) made lay-up. Wayne State would not relinquish this lead the rest of the way. Moore was a key player in the stanza, scoring nine of the Warriors' 18 points in the second. Davenport mounted a 7-0 run to cut their deficit to 25-23 late in the quarter, but senior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) made sure the team went into halftime with a larger lead as she nailed a buzzer beating three-pointer to send the Green and Gold into the intermission with a 28-23 advantage.

Third Quarter
Wayne State stretched out its lead thanks to a 9-2 run in the first four minutes of the quarter. Senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) drilled a triple of her own shortly after to give WSU its largest lead of the game to that point, a 12-point cushion (37-25). In the span of 4:38 after the media timeout, only six points were collected between the two squads, with each scoring three points. The Panthers scored their three points all on free throws, as the Warriors did not allow any made baskets in the final 5:48 of the stanza. Wayne State out-scored Davenport in the period by a 12-7 margin.

Fourth Quarter
WSU continued to play stifling defense, extending DU's drought without a field goal to over seven minutes. The Panthers were able to end the drought with a lay-up and free throw by Scout Nelson to complete a three-point play and cut the score to 42-33 for Wayne State. Davenport mounted a comeback effort late, eventually closing to within five points (48-43) on an 8-0 run with five minutes remaining, as Nelson and Leidel each knocked down triple tries. However, this was the closest they would come, as the Warriors helped retain their lead in large part to success at the charity stripe. They made 13-of-15 free throw attempts in the final 10 minutes to secure a 12-point victory.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 19-of-58 (33 percent) from the field, while Davenport went 19-of-60 (32 percent) from the floor. The Warriors knocked down 3-of-16 three-pointers (19 percent), compared to the Panthers' 32 percent (7-of-22). At the free throw line, WSU made 23-of-26 (89 percent), while DU went to the charity stripe 13 times and knocked down seven (54 percent). The Warriors won the rebounding battle 50-35.

Moore chipped in with 13 points as the other Warrior in double-figures. Tripp (5-of-5) and freshman Hillary Griffin (Jackson, Mich. / Parma Western) (4-of-4) were both perfect from the free throw line.
