Women's Basketball Falls to #6-Grand Valley State, 79-60, On Senior Day

Tripp (17 points) and Cecil (10 points) scored in double-figures.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (13-11 overall, 6-10 GLIAC) stayed competitive with 6th-ranked Grand Valley State (24-2 overall, 15-1 GLIAC) in the final home game of the regular season, but ultimately fell 79-60 to the Lakers on Senior Day at the Wayne State Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors and Lakers played a spirited first 10 minutes, with GVSU just edging out WSU 21-19 for the stanza. The first Wayne State points were fittingly scored by one of their celebrated seniors, as graduate student Mashayla Cecil (Murfreesboro, Tenn. / Paul Laurence Dunbar) knocked down a three-pointer. The Warriors held an 11-8 advantage at the media timeout thanks to another triple from Cecil, who had six points in the quarter. WSU led by four (19-15), but GVSU went on a 6-0 run to close out the stanza.

Second Quarter
A three-pointer from Emily Spitzley and lay-up from Hannah Kulas helped stretch the Lakers' lead to seven (26-19) early in the new quarter. With 4:25 remaining in the half, the Warriors were able to close the deficit to two (29-27) on a driving lay-up from senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.). However, after holding Grand Valley State to zero made threes in the first quarter, the Lakers hit 5-of-8 (63 percent) in the second stanza, including three in the final four minutes before the intermission as part of a 15-7 scoring stretch. Spizley and Kulas each nailed a pair of triples in the 10 minute span.

Third Quarter
The Lakers out-scored the Warriors 20-12 in the third, extending their lead to 20 points (66-46) by the end of 30 minutes. Sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) recorded six of the 12 WSU points in the quarter, with all six coming at the charity stripe. In fact, all 12 Wayne State points in the quarter were on free throw tries, as the squad went 0-for-9 from the field in the stanza compared to GVSU going 8-of-15 (53 percent). Graduate student Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) went 4-of-4 from the line, while freshman Thaya Luse (Elburn, Ill. / Example Academy) made the other two.

Fourth Quarter
Cecil helped end the Wayne State drought of nearly 15 minutes without a made field goal with a lay-up with 6:37 to play. Sophomore Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) tallied a pair of buckets in the final quarter, while Karasinski nailed a three-pointer to reach nine points for the contest. In the end, five different GVSU players tallied a point to contribute to defending the lead, and the Lakers were able to power away from the Warriors and secure a 19-point victory.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State finished the contest going 17-of-55 (31 percent) from the field, while Grand Valley State went an even 30-of-60 (50 percent) from the floor. After not making a three-point field goal the entire first quarter, GVSU recovered and ultimately finished 8-of-24 (33 percent) from beyond the arc, compared to WSU's 5-of-19 (26 percent) from three-point range. The Warriors made 21 of their 25 attempts at the free throw line (84 percent), besting the Lakers' 65 percent (11-of-17). Grand Valley State out-rebounded Wayne State by a 44-30 margin.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tripp (a game-high 17 points) and Cecil (10 points) were the lone Warriors in double-figures. Cecil recorded her second game of the season with 10 or more points (18 at D'Youville on Nov. 28). Tripp also recorded the Green and Gold's only blocked shot of the contest, contributed two steals, and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Four Lakers finished in double-figures for the game, including Spitzley and Kulas who tied for the team lead with 15 points. Rylie Bisballe (11 points) and Nicole Kamin (10 points) were the other two. Spitzley grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds for a double-double.
