Women's Basketball Drops Tight 79-75 Decision to Parkside

Shea Tripp amassed a game-high 27 points, one of three Warriors in double-figures.

KENOSHA, Wis. -- In the penultimate contest of the regular season, the Wayne State University women's basketball squad (13-12 overall, 6-11 GLIAC) were downed 79-75 by University of Wisconsin-Parkside (17-10 overall, 12-6 GLIAC) on Thursday evening inside the DeSimone Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors hit the ground running in the first two minutes of the game, hitting three of their first four shots and moving ahead 7-2. The contest would settle into a groove after that, as after Parkside marched back to nab a 12-11 lead at the media timeout (4:20 remaining), neither club would command an advantage of greater than two points. Senior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) had a strong stanza, netting eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, to help WSU to a one-point edge (19-18) after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
A 9-1 stretch for Wayne State in the first four minutes of play in the quarter helped extend the lead to nine points (28-19). Same as the first, however, the Rangers would put together an impressive span of their own, out-scoring the Warriors 10-2 over the final four minutes in the stanza to grab a 36-32 upper hand at the intermission. 11 of the 13 WSU points added up in the quarter were from sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center), who had six points, and senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.), who garnered five.

Third Quarter
The lead once again changed hands with 7:13 remaining in the quarter when graduate student Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) buried a triple to put Wayne State on top (39-38). This would be the first of six lead changes in the quarter, as this stretch of 10 minutes garnered six of the 11 lead changes for the contest. WSU also led 49-47, only for the Rangers to steal it back (50-49) on a jumper and pair of free throws by Grace Lomen. By the end of the stanza, Parkside retained a slim 53-51 control of the game.

Fourth Quarter
In the highest scoring quarter of the night (50 points combined between the two programs), UWP was able to hang on by out-scoring WSU 26-24. The team hit 8 of their 10 free throws in the final 10 minutes to help solidify the victory. Wayne State fell behind by as many as nine in the quarter, and a valiant effort to rally back fell short as Parkside went toe-to-toe with the Green and Gold in scoring. It was a mighty effort by Tripp, who collected 12 points over the final 10 minutes and made all five attempts from the floor.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 29-of-64 (45 percent) from the floor, out-shooting Parkside for the game as the Rangers were 42 percent from the field (25-of-60). The Warriors were 4-of-16 from three-point range (25 percent), compared to the Rangers going just 2-of-14 (14 percent) from beyond the arc. Both teams were quite successful at the free throw line, as WSU made 13-of-14 (93 percent) and UWP made 27-of-29 (93 percent). The Warriors were out-rebounded by the Rangers, 37-32.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tripp (26 points on 10-of-12 shooting) finished one point shy of tying her career-high, but still led all scorers. Fugate (17 points) and McArthur (12 points) also reached double-figures.Fugate led the team in rebounding with six. Freshman Thaya Luse (Elburn, Ill. / Example Academy) had five rebounds, including a team leading two offensive boards, and also was one of four Warriors to record a blocked shot.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Four of the eight Rangers to see the court registered over 10 points, including Lomen (a team-high 19 points), leading GLIAC scorer Alyssa Nelson (18 points), and Kayla Bohr and Zeiter (both with 16).
