Women's Basketball Concludes Regular Season With 68-54 Win Over Purdue Northwest

The Warriors carry momentum heading into the GLIAC Tournament next week.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (14-12 overall, 7-11 GLIAC) closed out the regular season schedule with a 68-54 victory on Saturday afternoon over Purdue Northwest (8-20 overall, 4-14 GLIAC) inside John Friend Court. Both teams will be playing in the GLIAC Tournament next week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors out-scored the Pride by 10 (23-13) in the opening stanza, with five WSU players chipping in on the scoreboard. Freshman Hillary Griffin (Jackson, Mich. / Parma Western) notched the first two points just four seconds in. Sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) and redshirt senior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) both scored six, with graduate student Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) scoring five (including the only made WSU triple of the period), and senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) providing four.

Second Quarter
WSU held a 31-19 edge at the second quarter media timeout, and extended the advantage to 14 (33-19) on a jumper from Fugate with 4:40 remaining. The Green and Gold reached 40 points by intermission with a lay-up from freshman Thaya Luse (Elburn, Ill. / Example Academy). The final two minutes of the stanza went scoreless from both teams, and Wayne State had a 12-point lead at halftime.

Third Quarter
In a stifling defensive effort to begin the second half, the WSU defense held Purdue Northwest off the scoreboard until the 4:59 mark, when PNW's Elexah Roepke ended the Warriors' 7-0 run with a made jump shot (47-30 WSU). Moore made a lay-up to put her team ahead by 20 (51-31) for the first time in the game. The lead for Wayne State would hover in this area of 18 to 20 points for the rest of the third.

Fourth Quarter
The Green and Gold rode to a 14-point triumph, doing enough to maintain a lead despite the Pride out-scoring the visitors 16-12. Moore reached 20 points for the contest by tallying the first two WSU baskets in the quarter. Sophomore Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) nailed a three-pointer as part of a five-point effort in the stanza.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 28-of-57 (49 percent) from the field during the contest, while Purdue Northwest went 22-of-56 (39 percent) from the floor. The Warriors made 4-of-17 (24 percent) of their three-point attempts, compared to the 3-of-14 shooting (21 percent) for the Pride from beyond the arc. WSU made 8 of their 12 (67 percent) free throw tries, and PNW made 7-of-12 (58 percent). The Warriors out-rebounded the Pride by 10 (36-26), and dished out more assists (14-10) than PNW.
