Women's Tennis Downs Northwest Missouri State 4-0 for Eighth Consecutive Victory

The Warriors scored all four points needed to claim the match win.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- In the second day of action at the Cooper Tennis Complex, the Wayne State University women's tennis team (8-0 overall) picked up its eighth consecutive victory by winning 4-0 over Northwest Missouri State (3-2 overall) on Saturday night.

DOUBLES
The Warriors earned the doubles point by nabbing two of the three contested match-ups.

It was the Bearcats who pulled out to an early edge in doubles action, however, winning at the No. 2 doubles spot. Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich.) were the comprised duo at No. 2 for the Warriors.

The No. 2 doubles pairing of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) picked up a 6-3 victory over Sofia Pignataro and Carolina Caetano Reis.

The action at No. 3 doubles was a thrilling battle to see which club would grab the point, and it would be the Warrior tandem of Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) coming out on top, 7-6 (4), in a tiebreaking decision.

SINGLES
Ruyssen kept up the strong play by being the first to finish in singles action. She won 6-3, 6-3 against NWMSU's Vera Alenicheva.

At No. 5 singles, Weekes claimed a 6-2, 6-2 triumph to give WSU its third point of the match.

The clinching point would come courtesy of Szpakowska, defeating Caetano Reis 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets and putting a bow on a well-played match for the freshman.

The other three matches went unfinished. Arafat won her first set 6-4 at No. 2 and was heading towards a tiebreaker in the second set (6-6).

Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) was locked in a three-set affair at No. 3 with Tessa Kwakernaak after winning the first set (6-3), and falling in the second set by that same margin.

Also seeing the court in singles play was Suki Mandair (Dexter, Mich.). However, her match was also cut short in the second set at the No. 6 spot.

FROM THE PLAYERS
"We played a tough team today and all rose to the challenge. Since we were all playing at the same time, we could really feed off each other's energy - and I think that made the difference. We hope to carry this momentum to the last match of the trip," said Martyna Szpakowska
