Women's Hoops Grabs Lead in Second Half, Defeats Northern Michigan 69-64

Tripp led all scorers with 25 points.

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (11-9 overall, 4-8 GLIAC) defeated Northern Michigan (12-10 overall, 7-6 GLIAC) for the first time this season, topping the Wildcats 69-64 on Saturday afternoon inside the Berry Events Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The two squads played a tight first 10 minutes with both totaling over 20 points. Sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) started off the game red hot, tallying eight of the Warriors' first 10 points scored. Graduate student Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) scored six points and nailed a pair of critical three-pointers as the Wildcats were beginning to extend their lead. Tripp (10 points) and Karasinski (six) notched 16 of the 20 WSU points.

Second Quarter
Tripp continued her dominating play by scoring the first points of the new quarter. Northern Michigan eventually extended their advantage to six (31-25) on a triple by Kayla Tierney. WSU went on an important 7-2 stretch at the end of the half to slash the NMU edge from seven to two into the break. This was capped by a three-pointer from Tripp to give her 17 for the half. Redshirt senior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) notched five points in the final three minutes.

Third Quarter
The Wildcats led the entire first half, but that would change in the third as the Warriors finally grabbed their first lead of the contest with two minutes left in the quarter (53-51) on a jumper from Moore. Prior to that, Wayne State knotted the score twice (49-49 and 51-51) as they continued to keep pace with Northern Michigan. NMU would tie the game once again (53-53) when Ana Rhude was good on a lay-up, setting up a deciding final 10 minutes.

Fourth Quarter
It was the Warriors coming out on top in the quarter, out-scoring the Wildcats 16-11 to grab a five point victory. WSU claimed the lead for keeps after Moore made a free throw and then a lay-up to move ahead by three. Tripp, Moore, and senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) would total all 16 points for Wayne State in the frame. There could have been no better time for Fugate to make an impact, as six of her eight points for the game were scored in the final 2:20 of play.
