Women's Basketball Secures Key 64-63 Win at Ferris State

Tripp sets a new career-high for a second consecutive game with 27 points.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (12-9 overall, 5-8 GLIAC) held on for a close 64-63 road win over Ferris State (14-9 overall, 7-7 GLIAC) on Thursday evening inside the Jim Wink Arena. The Warriors' win in the contest was the eighth consecutive triumph for the program in Big Rapids over the Bulldogs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
WSU grabbed its first points of the contest on a jumper from redshirt senior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day). Ferris State nabbed a 9-8 advantage at the 6:00 mark of the quarter on a three-pointer from Mallory McCartney. Freshman Hillary Griffin (Jackson, Mich. / Parma Western) nailed a triple of her own with just under five minutes to play, becoming one of five Warriors to collect points in the stanza. The Bulldogs received six points from Chloe Idoni, including a lay-up at the buzzer to put FSU ahead 16-13.

Second Quarter
By the halfway point of the second, Ferris State still held a three-point edge, 23-20. The Warriors were able to stay close through the efforts of sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) and senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.), who contributed all seven points scored by WSU in the five minute span. Wayne State knotted the score at 23-23 on a three by graduate student Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central), and would head into the break with a 27-24 edge after Fugate hit a free throw and made a lay-up with 65 seconds remaining before intermission.

Third Quarter
With the lead, the Warriors were able to put together their best stretch of the contest, out-scoring the Bulldogs 23-14 in the quarter. This even came after FSU led 33-29 with 7:20 to play. FSU stayed tight with WSU, but the Green and Gold went on an 8-0 run to finish the quarter and held Ferris State off the scoreboard in the final 3:27 of action. Tripp totaled 12 of the Warrior points in the 10-minute span.

Fourth Quarter
The Bulldogs reversed the third quarter result in the fourth, out-scoring Wayne State by the same 23-14 margin. FSU's long drought of nearly five minutes finally ended with a free throw from DeShonna Day, who then proceeded to tally the next five points as well on a triple and a made lay-up. Ferris State closed in a number of times, but never regained their lead back as the Warriors had key performances down the stretch from Tripp, Karasinski, and sophomore Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern), who buried a three-pointer with four minutes left.

FSU scored five points in the final minute and, after a steal from Elle Irwin, trailed 64-63 with the ball and an opportunity to win. However, Idoni and Kenzie Bowers missed lay-ups and the final horn sounded with the Warriors victorious.
