Women's Tennis Shuts Out Atlantis

The Warriors have not surrendered a point in two Florida matches.

MIAMI, Fla. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (11-1 overall) defeated USCAA member Atlantis University (0-3 overall) by a 7-0 score on Saturday afternoon in Miami.

DOUBLES
The Warriors kicked off their 11th straight match victory by sweeping doubles.

Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) were the first to finish at the No. 3 spot, grabbing a 6-2 win against Geraldine Salinas and Ana Montero.

Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) secured the point for WSU at the No. 1 spot with their 6-4 victory over Lajla Cemalovic and Szilvia Ferenczy.

The pairing of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich.) fell 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.

SINGLES
It was a clean sweep of singles for the Green and Gold, with five of the six matches being decided in straight sets.

Weekes was the first to post a win at the No. 5 spot.  She handled her opponent, Ximena Ku, by a score of 6-2, 6-0.

Ruyssen once again secured a victory in singles play, as she posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Cemalovic at the No. 1 spot.

Not to be outdone, Gorgidze looked strong at No. 3 singles, winning 6-2, 6-3 against Maria Garcia and officially clinching the match for Wayne State.

It was a 6-4, 6-3 triumph for Szpakowska at the No. 4 spot, as the freshman remains undefeated in individual action (12-0).

Also pulling out a victory was Laynes at the No. 6 spot.  She won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 against Montero.

The action at the No. 2 spot was fierce, with two sets requiring tiebreakers to determine the winner.  Arafat went toe-to-toe with Ferenczy, with the Warriors claiming the first set, 7-5, but dropping the second, 7-6 (4).  The final set needed a 10-point tiebreaker, and Arafat was victorious by a 10-8 margin to win the overall match and complete the shut-out win.
