Cedric Drenth Receives GLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week For Second Time

The Warrior also earned the recognition for the week of February 21.

DETROIT -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) once again released its weekly tennis awards, and Wayne State University sophomore Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) earned the men's tennis player of the week for the second time this spring.

The Warrior previously earned the award for the week of February 21, which was the first time in his career that he received the honor.

Drenth kicked off conference action last weekend with a spotless performance on the road at Ferris State and Grand Valley State.  As the No. 34-ranked singles player in the nation, he defeated Erik Kovacs on Friday (March 24th) in straight sets (6-2, 7-5), before handling the 61st-ranked singles player, Unai Gonzalez, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on Saturday (March 25th) to help the Warriors to their first GLIAC victory of the spring over the Lakers.

Both the Bulldogs (22nd) and the Lakers (39th) were on the latest edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) national rankings.

The Warrior teamed up with Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) in doubles.  The third-ranked pairing in Division II claimed a pair of 6-3 victories at the first flight over the weekend.

For the season, Drenth improved to 11-8 in singles, with nine of those victories at the No. 1 singles spot.  He and Grey are 12-7 together in doubles action for WSU.

The sophomore and his Wayne State teammates will continue conference play this weekend.  WSU will travel to Lake Superior State for a 10 a.m. start on Friday morning, before heading to Michigan Tech for another 10 a.m. match on Saturday.
