ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Wayne State University dance team competed at the 2023 College Classic on April 7-8, taking home the National Championship in the Division II Team Performance category. This is the first win for the WSU dance team, which is coached by
Kaithlin Fettes in her ninth season and
Kristin Gallagher in her second season as a coach.
Â
The 10 athletes that made up the 2022-23 dance team spend all year (May to April) on the sidelines of home football games as well as men's and women's basketball games. The team can also be found at events on and around campus supporting many philanthropic organizations. Preparing for this level of competition truly begins in the fall and continues through April's nationals. The team fundraises the entirety of their nationals experience, which includes choreography, costumes, cleaning, flights, the competition registration, and hotel stay.
Â
Led this year by fourth-year senior,
Kennedy Merritt, and second-year senior,
Jenna Alexander, the team achieved what no other team before them had, but had certainly paved the way for this team to achieve. The team also competed in the Jazz category, placing sixth in a very tight competition that included GLIAC programs, Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State.Â
Â
The team is proud to have represented Wayne State athletics and Wayne State University at The College Classic, bringing home the National Championship.
