Women's Golf Concludes Historic Season With 18th-Place Finish at Nationals

Warriors record best round of the tournament on final day of stroke play.

EUREKA, Mo. -- The Wayne State University women's golf team concluded its best season in the nine-year history of the program with its best round at the NCAA Championship Finals on Thursday recording a team score of 312 to finish the 54-hole tournament at 944.  The Warriors, with three freshmen in the lineup, finished 18th for the championships which were held at Fox Run Golf Club.

The top eight teams advancing to the Medal Match Quarterfinals on Friday morning are Dallas Baptist (874), West Texas A&M (877), UIndy (880), Findlay (880), Lynn (881), Nova Southeastern (882), Henderson State (893), and Cal State East Bay (895).

Individual Performances
Junior Beca Vestman (Madrid, Spain) posted a 74 (+2) in the final round to finish at 227 (72-81-74).  Her Thursday scorecard included 13 pars, two birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey.

Senior Avery Howard (Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths-Puffer), who was playing the final round of her collegiate career, had her best day of the championships with a +6 (78).  She finished the 54-hole event at 243 (83-82-78).  Howard's Thursday round included 11 pars, one birdie, five bogeys and one double bogey.

Freshman Sabel Imesch (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) also recorded her best round of the event on Thursday with a +7 (79).  The rookie posted 10 pars, one birdie, six bogeys and one double bogey.  Imesch's three-round total was 240 (81-80-79).

Newcomer Maisarah Hezri (Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia) carded a final round 81 (+9) to finish at 238 (78-79-81), second on the team.  Her Thursday round included 10 pars, one birdie, four bogeys and three double bogeys.

Freshman Orianna Bylsma (Montague, Mich.) shot a +20 (92) during the final round with five pars, eight bogeys, four double bogeys and one another hole.  She concluded the championships with a 264 (94-78-92).

UP NEXT
Wayne State graduates two seniors - Avery Howard and Natalie Groom - but has five returning letterwinners plus has signed Clara Laffitte (Montevideo, Uruguay) to a National Letter of Intent.
