SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Playing in the NCAA Regionals for the fifth-consecutive time the event is being held, the Wayne State University women's golf team is in third place out of 15 teams through round one. The Warriors shot a 293 (+5) on Monday, which is tied for their third-best mark of the season, are nine strokes out of Findlay in first and seven behind Indianapolis in third.
Individually, WSU has been paced by
Beca Vestman (Madrid, Spain / Colegio Base) and
Sabel Imesch (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South), who are both part of the four-way tie for second with a two-under 70.
Joining those two in the top 20 is
Maisarah Hezri (Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia / Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ibrahim) in a tie for 17th with a three-over 75. Also competing for the Warriors are
Avery Howard (Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths-Puffer) andÂ
Orianna Bylsma (Montague, Mich. / Montague), both of which are tied for 30th with a six-over 78.
The 15 squads will play 18 more holes on Tuesday with the course shrinking a bit from 6,127 yards to 6,114 yards.
After a third round of play on Wednesday, the top three (central), five (south), four (west), and six (east) teams, along with the top two individuals not on an advancing team, will advance to the finals.
