WSU Announces 2023 Football Radio/Streaming Crew

DETROIT - The 2023 campaign will be the 22nd season WSU football and basketball games have been aired on 1400 AM and contests are also available through the Internet at patriotdetroit.com and on 101.5 FM.

Veteran Detroit sports broadcaster Sean Baligian returns for his 15th season calling Warrior football.  Baligian has been on the Detroit airwaves since 1998, and was on Fox 2 from 2002-18.  He has also written for The Detroit News and MLive.com.  In October of 2007, Baligian was named Best Radio Sports Talk Host by the Metro Times for the people, places and things that make Metro Detroit great.  He hosts the SportsWrap show on WJR.  In addition, Baligian has worked for USA Hockey and does MHSAA hockey and football.  He also served as the play-by-play announcer for a Carolina Hurricanes TV broadcast.

Former Warrior defensive end Brady Beedon will serve as the color analyst for nine games and also handle the Locker Room Report and Senior Spotlight features for WDTK.  He graduated from WSU in December of 2019 with a degree in broadcast journalism and received membership into the 2020 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society for maintaining over a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average throughout his playing career.  He played in 36 career games, making 11 starts and totaled 40 tackles (26-14), including 10 for loss (7 solo, 6 assisted).  He is tied-for-ninth in school history with two blocked kicks and tied-for-26th with four quarterback hurries.  The last two seasons (2021 and 2022), Beedon served as the color analyst for a few broadcasts, while also handling the Locker Room Report and Senior Spotlight interviews.

WSU Hall of Fame tailback and kick returner Josh Renel will join Baligian in the booth for a pair of home contests.  Renel provided color commentary for one game in 2012 and nearly every game for nine seasons (2013-22).  He finished his collegiate career with nearly 5,600 all-purpose yards (which ranks second in school history behind Joique Bell) and became only the second player in NCAA Division II Championship game history to take back the opening kickoff for a touchdown.  During his 48-game career, he averaged over five yards a carry, nearly 12 yards per punt return and 25.0 yards on 64 kickoff returns.  Renel, who served as a team captain on the 2011 national runner-up squad, was inducted into the Wayne State University Athletics Hall of Fame in February of 2018.

In addition, WWJ Afternoon Anchor Tony Ortiz will serve as the sideline commentator during the six home broadcasts.  Ortiz previously served as the sideline reporter for the Comcast CN900 broadcasts of WSU football from 2016 through 2022.

"Our relationship with the Wayne State University Warriors is long and deep and treasured by us at Salem Media," commented Salem Media/WDTK Vice President and General Manager Chris MacCourtney.  "We look forward to cheering on the Warriors with new blood and new excitement on and off the field.  Go Warriors!"

In addition, the WSU Department of Athletics has partnered with The PreP for streaming home athletic events for the upcoming year.

"We are excited to elevate our media production services starting this year by partnering with The PreP for all home football and home men's and women's basketball contests," stated WSU Director of Athletics Erika Wallace.  "This will highlight the Wayne State brand moving forward within the media market and within Division II.  My hope would be to expand these production services for all home contests in the near future."
