Women's Fencing Earns Pair of Victories at Opening Event of 2024

The Warriors went 2-0 during Detroit Mercy's Titan Invitational on Sunday.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's fencing squad went 2-0 during its first competition of the 2024 season at Detroit Mercy's Titan Invitational on Sunday.  The Green and Gold posted wins over the University of Michigan (26-1) and the host Titans of UDM (25-2) inside Calihan Hall.

EPEE RESULTS
It was a perfect afternoon for the three Wayne State epeeists, as the Warriors swept the weapon 18-0 (including a 6-0 team mark).

Posting 4-0 bout ledgers in their collegiate debuts were freshmen Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary) and Salma Abdrabou (Mohandessin, Egypt).  The other Warrior to notch a 4-0 mark was senior Vika Shevchenko (Troy Mich.).  The trio each had three of their wins over competitors from the Wolverines, while each tallying one victory against UDM's Julissa Labra-Avila.

FOIL RESULTS
Three members of the Green and Gold secured a 2-0 bout record against the University of Michigan, including Noreen Bongado (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington), Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy), and Timi Terjek (Solymar, Hungary). 

Bongado and Terjek were making their collegiate debuts, while Mancini began her sophomore season with the strong performance.

12 wins in the foil were via no opponent, which included all nine bouts against the Titans.

SABRE RESULTS
Senior Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower (Macomb C.C.)) and sophomore Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem) represented the program in the sabre.  Byars went 2-4 with one victory each over the two opposing schools, while Siddiqui finished 1-5 in her collegiate debut.  Her win came over Hannah Benford from Detroit Mercy.

vs. University of Michigan: 26-1 (1-8, 9-0, 9-0)
vs. Detroit Mercy: 25-2 (2-7, 9-0, 9-0)

UP NEXT
Wayne State will be back in action on Saturday, January 27 at Notre Dame's DeCicco Duals.  Action from Castellan Family Fencing Center in South Bend Ind., is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
