Four Women's Fencing Student-Athletes to Compete in NCAA Championships

DETROIT -- Four members of the Wayne State University women's fencing team have qualified for the NCAA Championships, as announced by the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee.  In total, 144 student-athletes from 26 different institutions qualified.  The women's portion of the championships will start on Thursday, March 19, and conclude on Friday, March 20 at the University of Notre Dame.

The Warriors that will be competing are Salma Abdrabou (Cairo, Egypt) and Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary) in women's epee, along with Anabella Acurero Gonzalez (Valencia, Venezuela) and Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) in women's foil.  Galfalvy and Mancini both represented the Green and Gold at the NCAA Championships last season, while Abdrabou and Acurero Gonzalez will do so for the first time.

Last year, Galfalvy finished 20th in women's epee after tallying a 7-16 bout record, while Mancini placed 24th win women's foil with a 4-19 mark.

With four members of the WSU fencing program being selected, Wayne State has sent at least one individual (male or female) to compete in the championships since the 1947 season, when fencing returned following the conclusion of World War II.

FROM THE NCAA
The National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships include individual events in each of six weapons (men's épée, men's foil, men's sabre, women's épée, women's foil and women's sabre).

Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts (winner is first to five). After round robin, the topfour finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.

An institution's finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
