Women's Fencing Earns Four Victories at DeCicco Duals

The Warriors finished over .500 (4-3) on Saturday at Notre Dame.

SOUTH BEND, Ind, -- The Wayne State University women's fencing team notched a 4-3 overall record at Notre Dame's DeCicco Duals inside Castellan Family Fencing Center on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors fell to the host Fighting Irish (6-21), Denison (12-15), and Northwestern (7-20), but defeated Detroit Mercy (22-5), Cleveland State (20-6 with one double forfeit), Florida (22-5), and Lawrence (15-12).

"The team had a good weekend. I was very pleased with how the team fenced and supported each other throughout the day.  Overall, I think everyone stepped up their game from last weekend to this weekend.  We are looking forward to our strongest meet of the season at Northwestern next weekend," said head coach Andy Tulleners.

EPEE RESULTS
A trio of Warriors competed in the women's epee on Saturday, with all three posting at least one bout victory in each of the seven rounds.

Freshman Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary) continued her strong start to her first collegiate season by finishing 17-2 on the day.  She did not lose until the final round against Northwestern and posted a perfect 3-0 ledger against ND, Cleveland State, Florida, Denison, and Lawrence.

Closing the day with a 14-5 mark was senior Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.).  Her best rounds were against Florida and Lawrence, which saw the veteran epeeist garner a 3-0 record in the weapon against each team.

Another freshman with a strong showing was Salma Abdrabou (Mohandessin, Egypt).  She secured a record of 13-6 in the second event of her collegiate career.

The three Warriors were able to combine for an impressive 5-4 epee victory over the host Notre Dame squad in the second round.

FOIL RESULTS
UDM, CSU, and UF did not have foil squads, so WSU's four foilists participated in the other four rounds.

Sophomore Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) tallied a 7-4 record, including a 2-0 mark against opponents from Lawrence and 3-0 against tough competition from Northwestern.

Two freshmen were also in the weapon for the Green and Gold.  Timi Terjek (Solymar, Hungary) had an afternoon of 3-8, while Noreen Bongado (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) was 1-4.  Her win came against Denison's Bella Musto.

In her first event as a Warrior after a four-year collegiate career at Penn State, Halah Keramane (Atlanta. Ga. / Northview) finished 1-5.  Keramane's triumph also came against Denison in Lal Ertun.

SABRE RESULTS
For a second consecutive event, two Wayne State fencers were in the sabre.  Senior Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower (Macomb C.C.)) and sophomore Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem) both ended Saturday with identical 5-15 records for the seven rounds in South Bend.
