HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (8-9 overall) fell to No. 11 Missouri-St. Louis (15-2 overall) in straight sets on Friday morning before rebounding nicely to defeat former GLIAC foe, Ashland (12-6 overall), in four periods to cap off the night.
"Tonight was a great response after the tough match this morning," said head coach
Tim Koth. "It was nice to see the team show some grit and competitive fire when it was really needed. Looking forward to seeing it again tomorrow!"
Match One - #11 Missouri-St. Louis 3, Wayne State 0
HOW IT HAPPENED (16-25, 19-25, 22-25)
- Missouri-St. Louis improved to 9-8 in the all-time series against Wayne State.
- WSU hit .175 for the match with 35 kills and 18 errors on 97 total attacks.
- UMSL countered with a clip of .256 including 34 kills and 11 mishaps on 90 swings.
- The Warriors' best set came in the first at .267 (12-4-30).
- However, the Tritons' most efficient period was the first as well at .394 (15-2-33).

Kayla Giroux may have been the best player for either team as she hit .700 on 20 attempts.
- Giroux finished with 15 of Wayne State's 35 kills and just one error.
- The junior also blocked a pair of attack attempts to go with four digs.

Ella Uganski hit .250 on her 12 swings with five kills and just two errors.

HOW IT HAPPENED (-18, -21, 25-27, -22)

Molly Miller and
Kayla Giroux were unstoppable on the attack with 23 kills and 21 kills, respectively.
- Miller hit .465 with only three errors on her 43 total attempts.
- Giroux was nearly just as efficient with a clip of .439, three mishaps and 41 swings.
- Miller has now sent home 20 or more kills in seven matches as a Warrior while Giroux has done so three times, all this season.
- Wayne State hit .360 (61-12-136), the team's second-highest hitting percentage of the fall.
- The Warriors improved to 5-0 this year when hitting at least .280.
- Friday's .360 is the program's best clip against a non-conference opponent in over two years (Aug. 26, 2022 vs. Findlay).
- Ashland countered that mark with a hitting percentage of .237 (57-20-156), the best by an opponent in a Wayne State victory.

Kayla Dulgar (55 assists) reached the 50-assist plateau for the sixth time in her career and second instance this fall.
- Thanks to 13 digs as well, Dulgar has notched seven double-doubles in 2024.

Maya Wegand dished out three service aces while both
Ella Uganski and
Leigha Baldwin assisted on five blocks.
- Also on defense,
Kendyl Andrews racked up a team-high 18 digs.
