Women's Basketball Upended By Fifth-Ranked Ashland 73-53

Thompson and Miller combine for 25 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (0-2 overall) hosted fifth-ranked Ashland University (3-1 overall) on Sunday afternoon at the WSU Fieldhouse.  The Warriors led by as many as seven points in the opening stanza, but the visiting Eagles scored 46 points in the two middle quarters and out-scored WSU 73-53.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
After triples by Wayne State's Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) and AU's Ashley Mullett in the first 2:20, there were two lead changes over the next three minutes before a lay-up by Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich. [Lakeland University]) ignited an 8-0 Warrior run giving the hosts a 13-6 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the period.  Three different WSU players scored after Miller's bucket.

Ashland finished the quarter on a 5-2 spurt to pull within four (15-11) after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
After a lay-up by Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) on the first possession of the second period, Eagle Lydia Sweeney connected from long range, before Miller made another lay-up giving WSU a 19-14 advantage with just under nine minutes left before halftime.

AU's Hayley Smith started a 17-0 run by the guests with a lay-up 20 seconds after Miller's hoop.  Wayne State's scoring drought lasted 7:05 until a triple by McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center).  After Miller split a pair from the charity stripe, Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich. [Bowling Green]) concluded the first half scoring with a banked-in triple as time expired.

The Warriors trailed 31-26 at intermission despite shooting 53 percent (10-of-19) from the floor, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.  Fourteen WSU turnovers led to a 10-2 Ashland edge in points off turnovers.

Third Quarter
A Thompson lay-up cut the deficit to three (31-28), but Ashland responded with a 9-0 spurt to increase the margin to 12 (40-28) as Wayne State went over five minutes without a field goal (WSU did make four foul shots) before a Thompson fast-break lay-up pulled the Warriors within 10 (44-34).

The Eagles out-scored WSU 13-5 over the final four minutes of the quarter to finish the period with a 26-13 scoring advantage.

Fourth Quarter
The deficit was as much as 25 (71-46) with 2:26 left.  Wayne State tallied seven of the game's final nine points making the final score 73-53.
