Women's Tennis Falls 4-1 to #15-Washburn in Indianapolis

The Warriors will look to rebound on Sunday against the #12-Greyhounds of UIndy.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (1-1 overall) dropped a 4-1 decision to #15-Washburn (3-0 overall) in a neutral site contest on Saturday evening at the UIndy Tennis Center.

The match was the first ever between the Warriors and Ichabods in women's tennis.

DOUBLES
Washburn claimed two of the three doubles matches, giving WU the first point of the evening contest.

The lone WSU pairing to emerge victorious were Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) at the No. 2 spot.  They downed Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson by a 6-3 score.

In a heavyweight battle at the first position, a couple of nationally ranked duos squared off against one another.  Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland), the country's third-ranked team (No. 1 in the Midwest Region), lost to the eighth-ranked (No. 2 in the Central Region) Maja Jung and Lara Schmid.  The contest needed a long tiebreaker, but the Washburn tandem claimed the set, 7-6 (9-7).

The all-freshmen team of Dessyre Obedencio (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) suffered a 6-0 setback to Renske Ubachs and Maddie Shelley at the No. 3 spot.

Washburn claimed the point with its win at the first position after the squads split at the other two spots.

SINGLES
The Ichabods earned four of the five completed matches to come away with the victory.

WU went ahead 2-0 in the match via Shelley's 6-0, 6-1 win over Obedencio at the No. 6 spot, and later garnered a 3-0 edge following Ubachs' 6-3, 6-2 victory over Komar at the second flight.

The Warriors remained in the fight with Arafat's 6-3, 5-7 triumph over Koper at the No. 3 position.  Arafat came into the season as the No. 31-ranked singles player in the country via the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Washburn claimed the contest with the result at the No. 1 spot, where Jung (No. 3 nationally and No. 1 regionally) handled Ruyssen (No. 48 in the country and No. 7 in the Midwest) by set scores of 7-6 (9-7) and 6-1.

Action at the fourth and fifth flights went unfinished.  Szpakowska nabbed the opening set 7-6 (7-3) at the fourth position against Schmid, while Beaulieu (6-3 in the first set) and Martensson (7-5 in the second set) split their two sets and were in the early stages of the final one when the match was called early.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will finish its weekend in Indianapolis with a battle against the host UIndy Greyhounds on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.  The Greyhounds are the 12th-ranked program in Division II.
