Women's Fencing Registers Three Team Wins During First Day of Conference Championships

The epee and foil squads also finished in the top three for both weapons.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's fencing squad garnered three victories during the team portion of the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships on Saturday inside French Field House.  WSU defeated Lawrence (14-13), Cleveland State (21-5 plus one double forfeit), and Detroit Mercy (22-5) in finishing with a 3-3 ledger for the day.

The Warriors suffered losses to Northwestern (23-4), Denison (15-12), and Ohio State (21-6).  The Buckeyes hosted and earned second-place honors for the event, behind the Wildcats.  The two-day event features team competition on Saturday, with individual events on Sunday.

EPEE RESULTS
WSU's three epeeists fenced in each of the six rounds, with each turning in a strong performance.

Notching a team-best 13 bout victories to just three defeats was freshman Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary).  Her only three losses came against Northwestern, while she recorded a perfect 3-0 ledger four times during the day.

Another freshman in Salma Abdrabou (Mohandessin, Egypt) was not far behind her teammate with 12 bout wins to four setbacks.  Abdrabou was 3-0 in three competitions.

The veteran of the group, senior Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) mustered an even 8-8 ledger on Saturday in Columbus.  The trio's efforts were enough for a combined 39-15 mark and second-place in the final running order, which was the best result of the three weapons for the Green and Gold.

FOIL RESULTS
Wayne State foilists only battled in four of the six rounds, as both Cleveland State and Detroit Mercy sent no opponents to the strip.

The Warriors' standout foilist, sophomore Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy), collected a 7-4 record - including a spotless round against a challenging Denison squad.

Freshman Noreen Bongado (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) was 1-9, with her triumph coming against Denison's Alaina Cabalu.  Meanwhile, fellow freshman Timi Terjek (Solymar, Hungary) competed in each of the last three rounds in the foil and managed a record of 2-7.

Graduate student Halah Keramane (Atlanta, Ga. / Northview (Penn State)) saw limited action in the weapon and was 1-2 overall.

Wayne State nabbed a third-place team effort in the category with an overall 32-22 ledger.

SABRE RESULTS
The Green and Gold's usual sabreists of senior Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower (Macomb C.C.)) and sophomore Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem) competed in all six rounds.  Byars collected a 2-15 record, while Siddiqui finished at 3-14, including a 2-1 performance against UDM opponents.

Terjek and Keramane pitched in to help the squad's efforts in the weapon.  Terjek was 1-2 vs. the Titans of Detroit Mercy, while Keramane fenced in the sabre against Northwestern and was 0-3.
