Women's Tennis Brings Home Fifth-Place Finish at ITA National Indoor Championship

The Warriors defeated Nebraska Kearney 4-2 on Sunday in the final day of the tournament.

KEARNEY, Neb. -- The No. 14-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (4-3 overall) defeated Nebraska Kearney (5-2 overall) 4-2 on Sunday afternoon inside the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center to collect fifth-place at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championship.

The Lopers were the hosts of the event and came into the weekend as the eighth seed.  WSU entered as the seven seed.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold earned victories at the first two doubles positions to secure the opening point of the contest for a second straight match.

Both duos won by a 6-1 score.  Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) downed UNK's Alexis Bernthal and Tanya Midzi at the No. 1 spot, while Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) defeated Melisa Becerra and Narindra Ranaivo at the second flight.

Action at the No. 3 position went unfinished, which is where Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) played for a second consecutive day.  The two Warriors trailed Fabiana Gamboa and Jazmin Zamorano 4-3 at the moment the match was called early.

SINGLES
Wayne State used victories from its bottom three singles players to secure the triumph over the Lopers.

Before that, however, Nebraska Kearney tallied the first two completed matches at the first and second flights.  Ruyssen was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Gamboa, while Arafat fell 6-2, 6-1 to Ranaivo.

Entering the match for the first time was Shanice Weekes (London, England), and the sophomore responded with a 6-0, 7-5 triumph over Bernthal at the No. 6 spot.  Weekes' win tied the overall score at 2-2.

Notching a victory at the fourth flight was Szpakowska, who handled Becerra by matching 6-4 set scores.  The sophomore's triumph came vs. a nationally-ranked opponent, as the UNK player was ranked 32nd in Division II for all singles players.

WSU wrapped up its afternoon following Beaulieu's three set win at the No. 5 position against Midzi.  The freshman opened the match with a 6-4 win, before dropping the second set, 6-2.  She then mustered a 6-3 triumph in the final set to emerge victorious.

For the third time in as many contests over the weekend, Komar was unable to finish at the third flight.  The redshirt junior and her opponent, Zamorano, each won a set by a 6-2 margin, and the Lopers' player was in front 5-3 in the final set when the overall match concluded.
