Women's Fencing Tallies Two Wins at Northwestern Duals

The Warriors finished 2-6 over the two-day event in Evanston, Ill.

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Wayne State University women's fencing team participated in eight team competitions in two days at the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill.  The Warriors defeated Fairleigh Dickinson 22-5 to conclude action on Saturday, February 3, before downing Incarnate Word 17-8 (two double forfeits) on Sunday, February 4.

WSU suffered losses to Ohio State (22-5), Air Force (22-5), Boston College (17-10), and Stanford (19-8) on the first day, and to Temple (18-9) and Cornell (19-8) on the second day.

"This was a long two-day event for the team.  It was also our toughest meet of the whole season.  While we were short in our sabre squads, the teams as a whole really performed well.  Our epee squads really carried us through many of the rounds.  Our women's epeeists were really the trend setters on the team and consistently stepped up to every team we fenced.  Our foil squads showed the greatest improvement from the start of the meet to the end of the weekend.  Assistant Coach Svitlana [Shevchenko] and I have been pleased with how the team has been developing and pulling together after rounds to be prepared for the next round.  I am looking forward to how we perform at the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships," said Head Coach Andy Tulleners about this past weekend.

EPEE RESULTS
Three Warriors competed in the epee over the two-day event inside Ryan Fieldhouse.

Tallying a team-best 18 bout wins was freshman Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary).  The newcomer was 12-3 on Saturday and 6-3 on Sunday for a combined 18-6 ledger.  Galfalvy had four perfect rounds over the weekend - three on Saturday against AFA, BC, and FDU, and one on Sunday vs. Temple.

Close behind at 16-8 (10-5 and 6-3) was fellow freshman Salma Abdrabou (Mohandessin, Egypt).  Abdrabou notched a bout victory in every round, similar to her teammate Galfalvy, and finished her weekend with a 3-0 record against UIW to propel the Green and Gold to a second day win over the Cardinals.

Senior Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) totaled a 9-15 mark.  She went 8-7 on Saturday, before a 1-8 overall record on Sunday.  Her win on the final afternoon came against Incarnate Word's Gracyn Githens.

FOIL RESULTS
A quartet of Wayne State women's fencers combined for a 31-41 mark in the foil.

The best of the four over the weekend was sophomore Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy), who managed a 16-7 ledger.  That included an 8-7 record on Saturday and a perfect 8-0 mark on Sunday to close her event on a high note.

Freshman Timi Terjek (Solymar, Hungary) was 8-15 overall (4-11 and 4-4), including helping the Green and Gold to a 17-10 record in the weapon during the final day of battle.

Graduate student Halah Keramane (Atlanta, Ga. / Northview (Penn State)) was 4-10 with two bout wins on each day, while freshman Noreen Bongado (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) fenced in nine bouts and finished 0-9.

SABRE RESULTS
Senior Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower (Macomb C.C.)) and sophomore Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem) represented Wayne State in the sabre category.

Both Warriors garnered 3-19 ledgers.  All three of Byars' bout triumphs came against Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, while Siddiqui notched two wins vs. FDU and the other against Artemis Christeas of Boston College.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will next host the Danosi Open on Saturday, February 10, inside the Matthaei.  The one-day event will take place all afternoon and will serve as a precursor to the Warriors hosting the NCAA Midwest Regional event in early March, which will be inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.
