Ludovica Mancini Finishes NCAA Fencing Championships With 5-3 Mark on Day Two

The Warrior posted the same amount of bout wins on Friday (five) in six fewer contests than on Thursday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Wayne State University women's fencer Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) concluded her final two cycles of round robin action in the women's foil at the 2024 NCAA Fencing Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday morning.  The sophomore had a strong finish to her postseason, as she tallied a 5-3 ledger to conclude with 10 bout victories inside the French Field House.

Mancini made her second national championship appearance after also qualifying for last season's postseason event in Durham, N.C.  She was the Green and Gold's sole women's representative in both campaigns.  Mancini's 10-13 record for the five rounds placed her 18th out of 24 fencers in the women's foil.  She posted a positive touch differential of +2 (31-29) on Friday to finish her run with an overall TD of -19 (73-92).

The fourth round saw the Warrior secure a 2-2 mark, with bout triumphs over St. John's Malwina Kolodziejczyk (5-2) and Brown's Anika Breker.  Mancini defeated three of her four opponents in the fifth and final round, including Princeton's Elizabeth He (5-2), Temple's Anna Novoseltseva (5-2), and Pennsylvania's Sabrina Cho (5-4).  Round five was also the sophomore's best round in terms of touch differential at +5 (18-13).

Below is the round-by-round records, with touch differentials, for Mancini at the 2024 NCAA Fencing Championships.
Round 1 - 2-5 (-10, 19-29)
Round 2 - 2-2 (-3, 12-15)
Round 3 - 1-3 (-8, 11-19)
Round 4 - 2-2 (-3, 13-16)
Round 5 - 3-1 (+5, 18-13)
TOTAL - 10-13 (-19, 73-92)

Wayne State remains in 20th overall out of 20 programs after the women's competition at the four-day NCAA Fencing Championships, although WSU is tied with U.C. San Diego in overall wins (10).  The overall team score will consist of both men's and women's action across the entire weekend.  A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes (both genders) during the competition.  There were 27 institutions that qualified at least one fencer for this weekend's event, so seven programs have only men's fencers that qualified for the Columbus, Ohio event.

Had Mancini finished in the top four of her weapon, she would have fenced in a semifinal consisting of 15-touch bouts.  The winners then advanced to the finals to determine first and second places in the final standings.  The overall winner of the women's foil was Jessica Guo of Harvard University.

Mancini and men's fencer Eyad Marouf gave Wayne State a presence at the national championships for another season.  WSU has sent at least one competitor (male or female) in each season since 1947, when the NCAA Fencing Championship returned after World War II.

Ohio State University continues to host this year's NCAA Fencing Championships at both French Field House at St. John Arena, which is where the semifinals and finals are being held.  St. John Arena is connected to the French Field House.

The men's action will be contested on Saturday, March 23, and Sunday, March 24, at the two venues.
