Men's Tennis Falls at #15-Rollins

WSU will play its third Spring Break match vs. Flagler on Saturday.

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- The eighth-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis squad (6-5 overall) drew a tough opponent in #15-Rollins (9-0 overall), but fell 4-0 to the Tar on Thursday afternoon at Copeland Stadium in Winter Park, Fla.

The Warriors were playing in back-to-back matches after defeating Division I Sacred Heart 5-2 on Wednesday (exhibition match) in Orlando, Fla.  It was the second contest on the five-match road swing across Florida for the Green and Gold.

DOUBLES
Rollins earned both completed singles matches to start the afternoon, which positioned itself with a 1-0 advantage early on.

The fourth-ranked duo in the country of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) lost 6-1 to RC's Luke Quaynor and Richard Stoiberer at the first flight, while Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia) and Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich.) fell 6-2 against Efe Comu and Nico de Giacomo.

WSU's fifth-ranked tandem of Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) went unfinished at 4-4 vs. Guillermo Castaneda and Charlie Putrino at the No. 2 spot.

SINGLES
The Tar handled business on home court in singles, as they nabbed all three completed contests.

Grey was downed 6-2, 6-0 by Comu at the first flight.  The Warrior is ranked 13th in the country via the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) computerized rankings.

Hill lost 6-3, 6-2 against Castaneda at the fifth position, while Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark) saw his first playing time of the afternoon in a 6-1, 6-4 setback to Putrino at the No. 6 spot.

The remainder of the matches went unfinished, highlighted by Spicer's strong effort at the No. 3 position.  The graduate student won 7-5 in the opening set against Quaynor, and was ahead 4-0 when the contest ended.

Drenth (ranked 18th) was in front 4-3 during his second set with de Giacomo at the No. 2 spot, after falling 6-2 in the first.

No. 62-ranked Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich. / Walled Lake Central (United States Air Force Academy)) tallied a second-set triumph of 6-1 vs. Stoiberer, after his opponent collected a 6-2 win in the first set.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will have a rare day off in Florida on Friday, before traveling back to Orlando, Fla., and the USTA National Campus to play #6-Flagler on Saturday, March 9, at 2 p.m.  WSU will be playing in the first of another back-to-back set on Saturday, with a date at #33-Embry-Riddle to follow on Sunday.
