Women's Fencing Competes at NCAA Midwest Regional in Detroit

Six Warriors saw time on the strip on Saturday inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

DETROIT -- Six members of the Wayne State University women's fencing squad competed in the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.  The team was paced by sophomore Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) and her fifth-place finish in the women's foil category.

WSU was hosting the NCAA Midwest Regional for the first time since 2017, when the event was held inside the Matthaei.

A large portion of each fencer's season score was determined with their performance on Saturday.  The other portion, which includes competition faced during the other meets this season, will be tallied prior to Tuesday, March 12.  That date (the 12th) is when the NCAA will announce selections for all 24 spots for each weapon.

The women's fencing competition began the day around 9 a.m., ahead of the men's action.  Programs that competed in the women's category at the Fieldhouse on Saturday included Cleveland State, Denison, Lawrence, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Wayne State.  Detroit Mercy did not have any women's representatives.

WOMEN'S EPEE
The epee's opening round saw three pools of seven, with the top 12 being promoted to the second pool.  The final results were then determined based on both rounds.

Pool Round #1
Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary) - 4-2 (+3, 26-23)
Salma Abdrabou (Tarek) (Mohandessin, Egypt) - 5-1 (+10, 29-19)
Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) - 3-3 (-6, 18-24)

Galfalvy and Abdrabou advanced to the second pool.

Pool Round #2
Galfalvy - 3-8 (-15, 36-51)
Abdrabou - 3-8 (-12, 38-50)

Results
Abdrabou - 11th (8-9)
Galfalvy - 12th (7-10)
Shevchenko - 13th (3-3)

Amanda Pirkowski of Notre Dame finished first in the field of 21.

WOMEN'S FOIL
The foil had less than 18 competitors (17), so one large pool of round-robin action was contested in the weapon to decide the finishing order.

Pool Round #1
Ludovica Mancini - 10-6 (+16, 66-50)
Timi Terjek (Solymar, Hungary) - 1-15 (-44, 32-76)
Halah Keramane (Atlanta, Ga. / Northview (Penn State)) - 1-15 (-49, 30-79)

Results
Mancini - 5th
Terjek - 16th
Keramane - 17th

ND's Josephina Conway was the overall winner in the foil.

WOMEN'S SABRE
The competitors in the sabre category had the same format as the epee, but with three pools of six rather than seven.  12 of the 18 participants were promoted to the second pool, upon which the final tally was determined.  Jadeyn Williams of Notre Dame placed first.

Wayne State had no representatives in the weapon.

UP NEXT
Wayne State's fencers will have their fate determined in the NCAA selection release on Tuesday, March 12.  Any Warrior to earn a bid will then compete at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday, March 21, and Friday, March 22.  Ohio State will host inside the French Field House.

Each of the four regions nationally (Mid-Atlantic/South, Midwest, West, and Northeast) receive a set amount of bids per weapon per gender with two national at-large bids per weapon per gender also being awarded.  The breakdown of the bids for the Midwest Region is as follows: (women's foil - 5, women's epee - 5, women's sabre - 4).
