Women's Tennis Wins Sixth Consecutive Match at Palm Beach Atlantic

The Warriors tallied their second consecutive 7-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The third-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (8-3 overall) secured a 7-0 triumph over Palm Beach Atlantic (2-8 overall) on Saturday afternoon at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center for the squad's sixth straight victory.

The triumph was the Green and Gold's second consecutive 7-0 shutout win.  WSU also claimed a 7-0 victory over NAIA member Florida National on Thursday in Hialeah, Fla.

DOUBLES
The Warriors notched the doubles point with three victories.

The fourth-ranked Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) defeated PBA's Simona Karlsson Hantzis and Cecilia Peroni 6-4 at the No. 1 position, while Wayne State's other nationally-ranked tandem (No. 35) of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) nabbed a 6-2 win against Frida Alsterhem and Alina Hoermann at the second flight.

It was the same 6-2 triumph at third doubles for Justine Beaulieu and new playing partner Shanice Weekes (London, England).  The duo played in a match together for the first time ever and downed Virginia Borja and Jelsyvette Croes.  It was also Weekes' first dual match of the season in doubles, after she had played exclusively in singles for eight contests.

SINGLES
WSU finished strong by garnering all six singles positions to secure an all-around complete effort on Saturday.

Ruyssen faced a tough opponent in the 20th-ranked Karlsson Hantzis, and the redshirt junior showed she was up for the challenge with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the first flight.

Arafat blanked Hoermann 6-0 in the opening set at No. 2 singles, before claiming the second set 6-2 for the win.  Arafat appears in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) rankings in 72nd for Division II.

At the No. 3 position, Komar faced Borja and won 6-4, 6-2, while Weekes jumped to the fifth flight for the third straight match and handled Croes by set scores of 6-2 and 6-0.

Playing in her first singles match of the season was Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia).  The Warrior managed a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the No. 6 spot vs. Alsterhem.

In the most competitive match of the afternoon, both sets between Szpakowska and Peroni at the fifth position required a tiebreaker.  Szpakowska obtained both of them via 9-7 and 7-3 scores to finish the spotless performance for the Green and Gold.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will finish its three-match Spring Break trip across Florida by playing #21-Flagler in a neutral site affair on the campus of Nova Southeastern.  The contest will be played at NSU's Tennis Complex at Rolling Hills, with a start time set for 11 a.m. between the Warriors and the Saints.
