Wayne State Announces 2024 Football Schedule

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football team, under the direction of second-year head coach Tyrone Wheatley, will host six contests in its 11-game 2024 schedule announced today.  The Warriors will have two home games each month of the season.

WSU will open its slate at former GLIAC rival Tiffin on Thursday, September 5.  The kickoff time at Frost-Kalnow Stadium has not been finalized.  The Warriors and Dragons have met 11 times before with WSU holding a 7-4 advantage.  The schools met eight times as GLIAC foes from 2008-2017 with Wayne State winning five of those affairs.  TU has won the last two meetings and four of the last five, including a 27-13 triumph at Tom Adams Field on Sept. 29, 2018, in the last match-up.

Week 2 (Sept. 14) will see another match-up against a former GLIAC rival as Findlay travels to the Motor City.  The schools have met 23 times before with the Oilers holding a slim 12-11 edge.  The last 17 meetings were as GLIAC rivals with WSU winning nine of those match-ups, including the last three (twice in Ohio, and a 31-26 triumph at Tom Adams Field on Oct. 31, 2015).

Indianapolis will visit Detroit in week 3 (Sept. 21) for a 6 p.m. kickoff to complete a two-year home-and-home agreement.  This will be the 25th all-time meeting between the football programs with UIndy having a 14-10 lead in the series.  Ironically, WSU is 7-6 in the Railroad City, but just 3-8 at home vs. the Greyhounds.  Indianapolis has won the last three match-ups, with Wayne State's last win at home being a 41-27 victory on Nov. 6, 2010.

The Warriors make the trek to Kirksville, Mo., for a week 4 contest (Sept. 28) at Truman State (formerly called Northeast Missouri State).  The Bulldogs have a 5-3 edge in the all-time series, including three straight wins.  WSU's last win in the Show Me State was Oct. 11, 1975, when the Tartars claimed a 41-7 triumph over NMS.

Wayne State will commence its seven-game league slate with a trip to Michigan Tech for a GLIAC match-up on Oct. 5.  WSU has a 20-13 advantage in the all-time series, including nine victories in 17 previous meetings in Houghton.  The Warriors won last year's battle in Detroit 23-21.

WSU will play its conference home opener at 6 p.m. on Oct. 12 vs. Ferris State.  The Bulldogs have won the last nine meetings to take a 33-22 lead in the all-time series.  Wayne State is 13-16 at home against FSU.

The following week (Oct. 19), the Warriors will make the first of two trips to the west side of the state for a contest at Davenport.  In one of the most bizarre all-time series that is tied 3-3, WSU is 3-1 at Farmers Athletic Complex, but 0-2 at home versus the Panthers.

Wayne State returns home for the annual Homecoming/Hall of Fame contest on Oct. 26.  This year's opponent will be Saginaw Valley State in a 1 p.m. kickoff.  The Cardinals have won the last four match-ups, including last year's 17-10 overtime affair in University Center.  WSU is just 5-18 at home all-time against SVSU.

The Warriors then travel to Allendale for a 3 p.m. kickoff vs. Grand Valley State.  The Lakers have won four straight in the series, since Wayne State earned a 31-17 triumph at Lubbers Stadium on Nov. 16, 2019.

WSU will play its final two regular-season contests at Tom Adams Field beginning with a 1 p.m. kickoff against GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt University.  RU did not field a football team until its merger with Robert Morris (Ill.) in March of 2020.  The Lakers posted a 6-4 record in 2023 as a member of the Mid-States Football Association of the NAIA.  RU was 7-3 in 2022.

The Warriors will complete the regular season with a 1 p.m. home contest against Northern Michigan.  WSU has won four of the last seven meetings to pull within 20-16 in the all-time series.  The Warriors have a 9-8 mark at home versus the Wildcats.

Football season tickets for the 2024 campaign are on sale, while single-game tickets will be available starting with the spring game on Saturday, April 13.
