Abdrabou Fences at World Championship Event in Saudi Arabia

The freshman Warrior went 8-1 on Monday in the Junior Women's Epee.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Wayne State University women's fencer Salma Abdrabou (Tarek) (Mohandessin, Egypt) competed at the Junior & Cadet Fencing World Championships on Monday and Wednesday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  The competition was held inside the King Saud University Sports Arena.

It was the freshman's second international appearance of 2024, of which totaled records do not count towards collegiate career ledgers.  Abdrabou previously went 8-1 to win the Junior Women's Epee at the Junior & Cadet African Zonal Championships in Cairo, Egypt, on March 5.

In pool action for the individual round on Monday in Riyadh, Abdrabou posted a spotless 6-0 mark with a +11 touch differential (29-18), which put her as the ninth-seeded participant for the elimination table following the opening round.

The Warrior secured two 15-touch bout victories before falling in the Round of 32.  Abdrabou downed Australia's Imogen Rice (seeded 120th) by a 15-4 score in the Round of 128, before topping Venezuela's Victoria Guerrero Hidalgo (seeded 56th) 15-14 in the Round of 64.

Her loss came in a 15-10 decision to the No. 24-seeded Dilnaz Murzataeva of Uzbekistan in the aforementioned Round of 32.  Murzataeva advanced to the quarterfinals (top eight) before being defeated 14-13 by the eventual champion of the Junior Women's Epee event, France's Oceane Francillonne.

Overall, Abdrabou went 8-1 for her time in the weapon at the competition - the same mark she recorded in her first international trip in Egypt.  She placed a strong 20th overall out of the 169 fencers that competed in the Junior Women's Epee on Monday.

The freshman then participated with Team Egypt in the team competition on Wednesday, April 17.  She added 18 touches towards Egypt's team score against Bulgaria in the Round of 32, which helped the nation to a 45-35 victory.  Abdrabou then tallied eight touches towards the score in Egypt's 45-28 loss to Italy.  For the team competition, Abdrabou and Egypt placed 16th out of 33 countries with a 1-1 ledger.

Wayne State is currently in its offseason after completing 2024 at the NCAA Fencing Championships between March 21 and 24 in Columbus, Ohio.
