Men's Tennis Secures 5-2 Win at Purdue Northwest

The Warriors played the penultimate match of their regular season on Friday.

GRIFFITH, Ind. -- The No. 25-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (12-9 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) notched a 5-2 victory at Purdue Northwest (12-8 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon at the Match Point Tennis Facility in Griffith, Ind.

The Warriors remained alive for a share of the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship with the win.  However, Ferris State won 6-1 vs. Michigan Tech on Friday and with a triumph on Saturday vs. Lake Superior State will secure the title for itself.

DOUBLES
It was not a perfect start for the Green and Gold, as the Pride grabbed a pair of doubles wins to earn the match's first point.

WSU's winner in doubles came via Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) at the top flight.  The second-ranked duo in Division II tallied a 7-5 win over Joao Martins and Francisco Lanusse.

Over at the No. 2 spot, the No. 21-ranked Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) fell by the same 7-5 score to Samuel Dickson and Alex Van Lumich, while Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich. / Walled Lake Central (United States Air Force Academy)) lost 6-2 against Daniel Chicano Melero and Daniel Sroka.

SINGLES
WSU earned victories in five of the six singles contests to overcome its 1-0 deficit and nab the 5-2 win over PNW.

Grey, now ranked third in the nation for the category, registered a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Dickson at the No. 1 position.  It was the senior's sixth straight win in singles, including all five conference affairs.

Winning his eighth consecutive singles contest was Drenth at the second flight.  The No. 10-ranked player squared off with Van Lumich and had set wins of 6-1 and 7-6 (8-6).

Spicer posted victories of 6-3 and 6-4 in downing Chicano Melero at the No. 3 spot, while Kitayama had similar scores (7-6 (6-4), 6-3) in defeating Martins at the No. 4 position.

The final Green and Gold win in singles belonged to Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark) at the sixth flight.  He managed a 6-2, 6-4 win vs. Lanusse.

Purdue Northwest's lone singles triumph came from Pedro Diaz over Hill at the No. 5 spot.  The two participants split the opening two sets (6-3 for Diaz and 6-4 for Hill), before the Pride player won the 10-point super tiebreaker by a 10-7 margin.
