Women's Tennis Shuts Out Purdue Northwest for Seventh Straight Win

The Warriors inched one step closer to a GLIAC Regular-Season Championship on Friday.

GRIFFITH, Ind. -- The No. 20-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (15-5 overall, 6-0 GLIAC) recorded a 7-0 shutout at Purdue Northwest (7-16 overall, 1-6 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon inside the Match Point Tennis Facility to move one step closer to a GLIAC Regular-Season Championship.

The Warriors will clinch the league title with another victory on Saturday at Davenport in the regular-season finale.  The team has won seven straight contests and have now had four shutout triumphs during the streak.

DOUBLES
WSU secured two doubles matches to earn the opening point of the contest.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) won 6-1 at the second flight over Daniela Rubio and Alma Vazquez Rioja, while Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) downed Salma Raslan and Sasha Adams by a 6-4 tally at the No. 3 position.

Arafat and Szpakowska collected their seventh straight win together, while Gorgidze and Weekes picked up their sixth in a row with each other.

The Green and Gold's No. 11-ranked duo of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) lost 6-4 against Hayley Tsuen and Sienna Lopez at the top flight.

SINGLES
It was a sweep in singles for Wayne State with six victories, which gave the squad its sixth 7-0 shutout of the spring season.

Both Ruyssen and Arafat, playing at the top two positions, needed three sets to secure their victories.  The No. 34-ranked Ruyssen fell 6-3 to Lopez in her opening set, but rebounded for wins of 6-2 and 7-6 (7-4) to defeat her PNW opponent at the No. 1 spot.

Similarly, Arafat also lost 6-3 at the second flight to Rubio, but managed 7-5 and 6-3 triumphs in the other two sets to complete the comeback performance.

Komar defeated Rioja 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot, while Szpakowska handled Raslan by matching 6-1 set scores at the No. 4 position.

Continuing with the theme of wins in straight sets, Gorgidze earned victories of 6-4 and 6-3 vs. Tsuen at the fifth flight.

Seeing action for the first time in the match was Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) in her match at the No. 6 spot against Adams.  The freshman had back-to-back 6-2 triumphs to earn the win.

With the results on Friday, several Warriors extended their winning streaks in singles - including Arafat (seven), Szpakowska (seven), Ruyssen (six), Gorgidze (five), and Beaulieu (four).
