Women's Tennis Downs Saginaw Valley State to Advance to GLIAC Tournament Championship

The Warriors handled the Cardinals 4-2 on Saturday in Midland, Mich.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 27-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (17-5 overall) recorded a 4-2 win over Saginaw Valley State (8-11 overall) in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday in Midland, Mich., to advance to the GLIAC Tournament Championship on Sunday.

The Warriors saw their first action this weekend at the Greater Midland Tennis Center after receiving a bye through the first round by virtue of being GLIAC Regular-Season Champions.

WSU, the top seed at the event, will face No. 3-seeded Grand Valley State in the finals as the Lakers shut out No. 2-seeded Ferris State by a 4-0 score in the other semifinal contest.

DOUBLES
Saginaw Valley State, seeded fourth, won 4-0 over the fifth seed Lake Superior State on Friday - and the Cardinals used that momentum to claim the doubles point with two wins.

The Green and Gold's win in the category came from Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) at the second flight, where the duo earned a 6-1 triumph over Amelia Dickson and Elizabeth Stuart.

SVSU's Adriana Barrio and Tara Erler won 6-2 against WSU's 18th-ranked Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) at the No. 1 spot, while Johanna Michahelles and Lydia Liong defeated Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) by a 6-3 margin at the No. 3 position.

SINGLES
Down 1-0 overall in the match, Wayne State battled back with four singles victories in five completed contests to grab the 4-2 win.

Arafat squared off with Erler at the No. 2 spot, and the WSU sophomore tallied set wins of 6-3 and 6-2 to emerge victorious.

Over at the fourth flight, Szpakowska registered triumphs of 6-2 and 6-0 against Calli Sokolowski, while Gorgidze managed back-to-back 6-2 set wins vs. Dickson at the No. 5 position for another Green and Gold point.

The Warriors' other victory came via Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) at the sixth flight.  The freshman jumped up to play in place of Weekes and secured a 6-1, 7-5 decision against Liong.

Ruyssen, the No. 39-ranked singles player in Division II and fresh off being named GLIAC Player of the Year on Friday, fell by matching 6-4 scores against Barrio at the No. 1 spot.

The only match to not see a conclusion was Komar vs. Michahelles at the third flight.  The SVSU player won the first set 6-3, before the Warrior nabbed a 6-1 triumph in the second set.

With the results on Saturday, several Warriors extended their winning streaks in singles - including Arafat (nine), Szpakowska (nine), Gorgidze (seven), and Beaulieu (six).
