Baseball to Host First Place Saginaw Valley State

The Warriors come in trailing the Cardinals by one game in the standings.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (18-8 overall, 7-2 GLIAC) will host Saginaw Valley State (19-7 overall, 8-1 GLIAC) in a four-game series on Friday through Sunday at Harwell Field.  First pitch Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m., Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. and Sunday's contest is slated for 1 p.m. as well.

These two teams met on March 27 at Harwell and Saginaw Valley State defeated Wayne State in a slugfest, 13-10.  When looking at the all-time series between the two squads, the Warriors have won 10 of the last 13 meetings and 20 of the previous 24.  WSU is 30-27 at home all-time against SVSU having won five of the last six inside the friendly confines.  Starting Friday, they'll meet five times in a span of five days.  Wayne State was picked to win the league while Saginaw Valley State was selected to tie-for-second with Davenport.

Statistically, the Warriors' offense has been paced by five players hitting above the .300 mark.  Those five are Bennett Hitzelberger (.404 average - sixth in the league), Tony Hatzigeorgiou (.382), Drew Hill (.344), Kyle Ray (.333) and Mason McGuire (.310).  On the mound, WSU's four-man starting rotation has included Griffin Kilander (2.90 ERA), Seth Marano (3.06), Karter Fitzpatrick (3.07) and Ashton Potts (3.34).  Outside of those four arms, Evan Langlois has been the most dependable with a 4.87 ERA through 20.1 frames.

While Wayne State has hit .292 as a team (second in the GLIAC), Saginaw Valley State enters with a league-best clip of .342.  That mark features four of the conference's top five individual batting averages in Colin Cornwell (.464), Hayden Jatczak (.459), Reed Raymond (.426) and Brandon Scheurer (.416).  The Cardinals' Brady Carpenter (.367) and Austin Schweiger (.337) are also among the top 13.  Pitching wise, SVSU's team ERA of 5.41 (WSU - 4.36) is spearheaded by Jatczak's league-leading mark of 1.61.
