Women's Tennis Advances to Florida Following 4-1 Victory Over #24-Tiffin in Regional Finals

WSU won its 12th straight match and will play in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.

SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The No. 21-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis program (20-5 overall) officially punched its ticket as one of the final 16 teams in the NCAA Tournament following a 4-1 win over #24-Tiffin University (28-3 overall) in the NCAA Midwest Regional final round on Saturday morning.

The contest between the host Dragons (the No. 2 seed) and the Warriors (the No. 3 seed) was moved indoors to Court 1 Tennis in Sandusky due to inclement weather.  Friday's matches were held outside at the tennis courts of Norwalk High School in Norwalk, Ohio.  It was the second meeting of the campaign between WSU and TU, with Wayne State avenging its 4-3 loss to Tiffin earlier this season on March 20.  The Green and Gold also grabbed its 12th straight victory on the year with the performance.

The Warriors will be advancing to Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Sanlando Park for the NCAA Round of 16, which will be the second straight year they have done so.

DOUBLES
Similar to its effort against Ferris State in the regional semifinals, Wayne State won both completed doubles matches to secure the crucial first point of the day.

In an all-ranked affair at the top flight, the No. 25-ranked Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) squared off with the No. 35-ranked Anaelle Lepinay and Maeva Maxch.  The Warrior tandem nabbed a 6-3 victory in what was the first finished contest.

WSU officially managed a 1-0 advantage following a 6-4 triumph for Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.).  They defeated TU's Celine Ferron and Sarah Roy at the No. 3 position.

Action at the No. 2 spot went unfinished with the match deadlocked at a 5-5 score.  Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) were competing against Emily Barrett and Jemimah Choi in that matchup.

SINGLES
The Warriors tallied wins in three of the four finished singles matches to cross the finish line with a 4-1 triumph.

Tiffin evened the score at 1-1 briefly with Maxch's win over Ruyssen at the first flight.  The final scores in that matchup were 6-3 and 6-2.

Komar had the same set scores (6-3, 6-2) in her triumph over Barrett at the No. 3 spot, which put Wayne State ahead 2-1 -- a lead that the Green and Gold would never relinquish.

Arafat recorded her 11th straight win in singles with her 6-4, 7-5 victory against Lepinay at the second position.

The last matchup to finish for WSU guaranteed the program a spot in the NCAA Round of 16.  In the biggest match of her young collegiate career, the freshman Beaulieu was able to tally a two-set triumph vs. Roy at the No. 6 position.  The first set was tight at 7-6 (8-6), but the Warrior left little doubt with her 6-2 win in the second set.

Matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots went unfinished as the Green and Gold had already secured the victory.  Szpakowska fell 7-6 (10-8) in a close affair with Choi in the opening set.  The second set was tied at 3-3 when it ended early.

Gorgidze registered a 6-4 triumph over Carina Avram in their first set at the fifth flight, but was trailing 5-4 to her Tiffin opponent when the Warriors clinched.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will compete in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., against an opponent to be determined following other regional action on Saturday.  The Warriors will see the court next on Monday, May 20, at either 9 a.m. or 1 p.m. for the opening round of the Florida portion of the NCAA Championships.
