Women's Tennis Season Ends In National Quarterfinals

Warriors were blanked 4-0 By No. 2-Nova Southeastern.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The 21st-ranked and seventh-seeded Wayne State University women's tennis squad (21-6 overall) suffered a 4-0 setback to second-ranked Nova Southeastern (25-4 overall) in an NCAA Division 2 quarterfinal match on Tuesday evening at Sanlando Park.

For the second consecutive year, the Warriors finished tied-for-fifth in the nation.  The setback to the Sharks snapped a 13-match winning streak for WSU.

DOUBLES
NSU won at both first and third doubles to claim the doubles point.  The second-ranked Shark tandem of Freya Davies and Natalie Espinal upended the 25th-ranked Wayne State duo of redshirt juniors Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) 6-4.  

WSU's No. 3 doubles tandem of redshirt sophomore Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and freshman Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Quebec) fell 7-5 to Nova's Ita Habekovic and Patricie Kubikova.

The second doubles pair of sophomores Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) were 5-5 when the match was halted.

SINGLES
Espinal, the No. 2-ranked singles player in the nation, defeated Ruyssen, who ranked 49th, 6-0, 6-3 at first singles to put the Sharks ahead 2-0.

Nova Southeastern's Lexi Weir, who was ranked 18th, was a 6-4, 6-3 victor over Arafat at No. 2 singles.

NSU finished the match with a 7-5, 6-0 win by Davies over Komar at third singles.

Szpakowska claimed the first set (6-3) at fourth singles over #66-ranked Lian Benedejcic.

After dropping the first set 6-4, Gorgidze was ahead 4-1 in the second set at No. 5 singles, while Beaulieu also lost the first (6-2), but was leading 5-4 in the second set.
