Wayne State University Athletics

Statement from the AD

General Jeff Weiss, Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Media Relations

Statement From The Athletic Director

Statement from the AD:

Earlier today, the WSU Board of Governors approved the Athletics Department partnering with Huron, a global professional services firm with deep industry and capability expertise, including education and athletics, for a comprehensive evaluation that includes a full, competitive assessment of the current state of infrastructure, services and resources for our athletic department, including support we provide to ensure academic and career success for our student-athletes.

Competitive athletics programs provide many students affordable access to earn a college degree and have the potential to enhance student experiences and increase engagement with alumni, fans, and the community.  I'm so proud of how Wayne State Athletics – our student athletes, coaches, and staff – embody the values of our institution at every practice and competition.  Since the landmark Alston decision, there have been cascading changes in landscape of NCAA Division I, II and III collegiate athletics, including NIL, transfer portal, full cost of attendance, and conference realignments, which are expected to continue in the foreseeable future.  With that in mind and in kicking off my leadership, it is the right time to strategically assess and evaluate the operations of our athletic department in light of these shifting dynamics.

Go Warriors!
Erika Wallace
Director of Athletics
