DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's and women's fencing programs will host the Fencing Frenzy on October 27 in the Matthaei Center. This will be the first time since 2019 that the Warriors will host the event.
The event is a collaborative effort to grow the sport of fencing. The Fencing Frenzy will also be used as a fundraiser for the fencing programs and will be the first time that three varsity programs across multiple states have come together for a fundraising and community outreach event. Joining the Warriors will be members of both the University of Detroit Mercy and Lawrence University fencing programs.
Detroit Mercy head coach Michael Ramlow has over 20 years of fencing experience as both a player and a coach. Along with being the Detroit Mercy head coach, Ramlow has served as a coach for the Renaissance Fencing Club. Prior to his coaching career, Ramlow was a member of the Wayne State fencing team from 2008-2012 and competed in the NCAA Championships in his final year.
Representing Lawrence will be Eric Momberg, who was named head coach of the Vikings in 2020. Along with being a collegiate head coach, Momberg has coached internationally and has served as the coordinator for 2-4-1 Fencing. The 2-4-1 Fencing Initiative serves as a way for kids to learn fencing with simplified rules at a lower cost. Momberg is also a member of the USFCA (United States Fencing Coaches Association) Certification and Accreditation Board.
Wayne State head coach, Andy Tulleners, has 25 years of coaching experience at the club, collegiate, and international level. In 2021 and 2023, Tulleners coached the Jamaican National Team at the Central American and Caribbean Games and was selected as the USFCA Collegiate Director in 2024.
Attendees will have the opportunity to be engaged by coaches and athletes from all levels of international play. The event will have multiple stations and demonstrations along with opportunities to purchase apparel from the represented institutions.
