COLUMBUS -- The Wayne State University men's fencing squad competed during the first day of The Ohio State University's Elite Invitational on Saturday, November 8, in the French Field House.
On day one, the Green and Gold went 1-4 with the lone win coming against Cleveland State, 20-7. WSU fell in bouts with OSU (20-7), the Air Force Academy (19-8), the University of North Carolina (22-5), and the University of Pennsyvania (20-7).
FOIL
In the foil,
Finn McIsaac (West Bloomfield, Mich.),
Lukas Tsao (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.),
Jakub Oronowicz (Clarkston, Mich.), and
Sam Gneuhs (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) each represented Wayne State.
McIsaac tallied a 2-9 overall ledger that included a 2-1 bout ledger in the team's win over CSU.
Tsao collected a 3-9 record during the first day, nabbing wins over student-athletes from OSU, Air Force, and Penn.
Oronowicz (2-11) and Gneuhs (2-7) each won a pair of bouts, with both earning wins over members of Cleveland State's team.
EPEE
Four Wayne State student-athletes saw action in the epee weapon, as
Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt),
Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla. / Lincoln Park / Celebration),
Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.), and
Justin Chenh (Falls Church, Va.) all competed in day one.
Elsayed found the most success, collecting an 11-4 bout record that included a pair of 3-0 performances against UNC and CSU, while going 2-1 in bouts with Air Force, and Penn.
Dinkins posted a 4-8 ledger on the first day of competition, with one win in a bout against Penn, and three victories over Cleveland State student-athletes.
Heim nabbed a 3-7 overall mark, with a pair of bout triumphs over Air Force and one more against the Buckeyes.
Chenh tallied a 1-7 record with his lone win coming against Cleveland State.
SABRE
Gabriel Dumoulin (Newtown, Conn.),
Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt),
Connor Desautels (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow), and
Gwyd Perry (Bloomfield, Mich.) each competed for Wayne State in the sabre.
Marouf turned out a 9-3 bout ledger, collecting a 3-0 record vs. Ohio State, alongside three 2-1 performances against Air Force, North Carolina, and Penn.
Desautels went 5-10 on the first day of action, with wins against OSU, AFA, and the Vikings.
Perry finished day one with a 3-2 record, with all three bout victories coming over Cleveland State.
