Swim & Dive Programs Welcome Oakland to Detroit for Non-Conference Dual

Wayne State faces the Golden Grizzlies for its penultimate event of the regular season.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University swimming & diving teams are set to host their second-to-last dual of the 2024-25 regular season.  The Warriors will welcome Division I Oakland of the Horizon League into the Matthaei Center on Saturday with the action slated to begin at 1 p.m.

Coach's Corner
"We welcome the Golden Grizzlies from the great white north of Rochester, about 40 minutes up I-75, if you go the speed limit," said head coach Sean Peters.  "The Grizzlies are a repeating conference champion like from the time when the Bee-Gees were a thing.  We are excited to host them, and have some quality races and dives against a strong Division I program.  I am definitely excited to compete tomorrow at the Matthaei!"

History of Success
As coach Peters mentioned, the OU men have earned 46 Horizon League Championships while the women have claimed 30 of them.  Oakland's head coach Mitch Alters stepped in for the legendary Pete Hovland prior to last season.

Hovland joined Oakland's men's program as an assistant in 1979 before taking over as head coach two years later.  In that time, the Golden Grizzlies established themselves as one of the country's elite programs, winning their conference championship every season he was a member of the staff, a run that stretched to 45 consecutive.   He also served as Oakland's women's head coach for a total of 25 seasons, the last 23 of which were consecutive, helping them extend their own streak of 29 straight league titles.

Alters, who was part of Hovland's staff as an Associate Head Coach for two seasons, picked up right where Hovland left off leading the men's and women's programs to yet another conference championship in 2024.

Next Up
Wayne State's final event before postseason action will come on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. inside the Matthaei.  The Warriors will host Calvin for Senior Day with the festivities happening before the dual commences.
