Volleyball Welcomes No. 15 Ferris State and Davenport to Matthaei

Wayne State will look to avenge earlier season losses to the Bulldogs and Panthers.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (16-4 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) is set to play at home inside the Matthaei Center for the first time in 20 days.  The Warriors will host 15th-ranked Ferris State on Halloween night at 7 p.m. before seeing Davenport for Senior Day Saturday at 4 p.m.

Coach's Corner
"We're looking forward to being at home in the Matthaei Arena," said head coach Tim Koth.  "After several weeks of long road trips, the Warriors are looking forward to being in front of our fans and celebrating our seniors on Saturday."

GLIAC Offensive Player and Setter of the Week
Last week, Giroux hit .419 with 33 kills (3.67 per set) and only seven errors on 62 total attacks.  Defensively, the veteran middle blocker totaled 13 blocks, seven of which were solo, or 1.44 per set.  Her teammate Dulgar racked up 89 assists (9.89 per set), eight kills (.533 hitting percentage), nine aces, 17 digs and three block assists.  Among those nine aces came a career-high six aces on Friday at Michigan Tech.  Both received their respective honors for the sixth time in their careers and third time this season.

Road Warriors
As a team last week, Wayne State won at Michigan Tech for the first time since 2016 before the first road sweep of MTU and Northern Michigan since that same season.  That victory over the Huskies marked the Warriors' 15th of the season, their most in a single campaign since 2022.  With Saturday's thrilling five-set defeat of the Wildcats, WSU improved to 4-0 in five-set matches after going 1-11 in the last two seasons combined.

Best of the Best
Wayne State is among the top 50 nationally in multiple categories.  That includes assists per set (22nd - 12.77), kills per set (29th - 13.69), blocks per set (36th - 2.28), winning percentage (36th - .800), hitting percentage (42nd - .237), opponent hitting percentage (45th - .153) and team total blocks (50th - 171).  Individually, Giroux and Dulgar continue to be two of the most productive players in the country.  Giroux ranks 19th in hitting percentage (.382), 32nd in points per set (4.39), 42nd in total kills (279) and 43rd in kills per set (3.72).  Her setter Dulgar is 15th in assists per set (10.61) and 25th in total assists (796).

Scouting Ferris State (18-4 overall, 9-1 GLIAC)
Ferris State is one of the hottest teams in the country and comes in having won 11 straight matches under 30th-year head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm (688-248 overall record).  That 11-match streak started in Big Rapids on Sept. 27 against Wayne State.  Among the Division II ranks, the Bulldogs are slotted 15th in digs per set (18.15), 20th in kills per set (13.95), 24th in winning percentage (.818), 30th in hitting percentage (.248) and 35th in opponent hitting percentage (.148).

FSU's efforts have been spearheaded by a pair of players in sophomore setter Hayley Wegener and sophomore outside hitter Gabby Piazza.  Nationally, Wegener is 28th in assists per set (10.11) and 34th in total assists (758).  Her teammate Piazza is 36th in kills per set (3.81), 36th in total kills (286) and 46th in points per set (4.25).

Scouting Davenport (11-10 overall, 7-3 GLIAC)
Hovering one win above the .500 mark, Davenport just snapped a three-match losing streak by winning at Purdue Northwest in straight sets last Friday.  Aside from that home tilt against the Pride, second-year head coach Charley Andrews (21-29 overall record) and the Panthers are in the midst of a stretch in which they'll play 10 of 11 matches away from home.

Offensively, DU's leaders include junior outside Abby Alan (223 kills), rookie setter Madison Berry (755 assists) and sophomre libero Hayley Carr (26 service aces).  On the defensive side of the ball, Davenport's ringleaders have been Carr (338 digs) and senior middle blocker Kaitlin Jordan (52 total blocks).
