Men's Fencing Breaks School Record With Ten All-Academic Honorees

Wayne State shattered its previous school record of six honorees, last set in 2024-25.

DETROIT -- The 2025-26 Wayne State University men's fencing team crushed its previous school record with 10 GLIAC All-Academic honorees, seven of which earned a spot on the Excellence Team.  This is the seventh year the GLIAC has recognized student-athletes from non-GLIAC sports with Academic All-GLIAC accolades.

Criteria states that student-athlete must be an active member on their respective sport roster at the end of the season, and not a true freshman or a first-year transfer student.

Grade-point averages listed are calculated through the fall semester since that was the last grading period before the season ended.

The seven student-athletes that were included on the All-Academic Excellence Team for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 were sophomore Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr), senior Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill), junior Sam Gneuhs (Mason, Ohio / William Mason), senior Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.), junior Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif. / San Francisco School of the Arts), graduate student Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt / European International School of Alexandria), and sophomore Jakub Oronowicz (Clarkston, Mich.).

Marouf (Master's degree in Anatomy and Cell Biology - 3.50) made the Excellence Team for a fourth-straight year, while Gatrell (Finance - 3.56), Heim (Chemistry Honors (3.92), and Garrett (Marketing - 3.75) all were honored for the third time in as many seasons.  Gneuhs (Sport Management - 3.80), who was first-year eligible last campaign, was recognized for the second-straight year.  Both Elsayed (Finance - 3.64) and Oronowicz (Music - 3.72) were first-year eligible as sophomore student-athletes.

The remaining three Warriors earned All-Academic Team accolades for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0-3.49.  They were senior Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla. / Celebration), sophomore Brendan Goeddeke (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren De La Salle), and sophomore Carlos Santos (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Grand Rapids).

Dinkins (Technology, Information Systems and Analytics - 3.23), Goeddeke (Civil Engineering - 3.24), and Santos (Biomedical Engineering - 3.14) all were on the All-Academic Team for the very first time in their collegiate careers. For Goeddeke and Santos, they were eligible for the first time.

The men's fencing team had nine student-athletes on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for a term GPA of 3.5 or better during the Winter 2026 semester.  Two accomplished a perfect 4.0 term GPA for the semester.
