Women's Soccer Announces Second Group of Recruits

DETROIT -- Doug Steinard, the inaugural head coach for the Wayne State University women's soccer program, has announced his first Warrior recruiting class.  This is the second of at least three recruit stories over the next couple of weeks.

These four high school seniors will enroll at WSU in the fall of 2026 and be members of the squad for the inaugural season in program history.

Becoming Warriors are defenders Maya Bjedov (Brighton, Mich.), Camy Budzik (Oxford, Mich.) and Samantha Powers (Grand Ledge, Mich.), along with forward Sabrina Gaul (Troy, Mich.).

"We are very excited about our very first recruiting class," remarked coach Steinard.  "It is a group of great kids with lots of talent, character, and commitment.  We believe they will help us compete in our first year of the GLIAC.  The class is a balanced group of players who have a lot of experience playing at a high level, and we're confident they'll make an immediate impact on and off the field as we continue to build our program's foundation."

 Will be a 2026 graduate of Brighton High School ... will be a four-year letterwinner for coach Ryan Carriere ... helped the Bulldogs to two district titles (2023 and 2025) ... selected to the 2025 Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association Division 1 Honorable Mention All-State team ... received All-KLAA (Kensington Lakes Activities Association) honors ... aided in the Bulldogs compiling a 37-19-7 record in her first three seasons ... will serve as a team captain this spring ... also played basketball for BHS ... earned Academic Honors all four years.

Club Team:  Michigan Tigers FC ... voted Best XI by TopDrawerSoccer ... aided in the team winning the 2025 USYS U17 national championship ... scored the first goal of the match in the national championship game.

Personal:  Full name -- Maya N. Bjedov ... born on February 1, 2008, in Commerce Township, Mich. ... daughter of Gregory and Denise Bjedov ... father was a goalie at Eastern Michigan ... has an older sister, Ava ... plans to major in Biological Sciences ... last name is pronounced B-yed-iv.

Camy Budzik, 5-9, D/MF, Oxford, Mich. / Oxford [Nationals]
High School: 
Will be a 2026 graduate of Oxford High School ... will be a four-year letterwinner for coach Gabrielle Schriver ... selected to the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association Division 1 All-State Third Team as a junior ... received All-District and All-Oakland Activities Association Red Division accolades in 2025 ... helped the Wildcats to a 9-9-3 mark as a junior, including a district title ... aided in OHS compiling a 22-12-5 mark her first two seasons combined ... played all 90 minutes in every game in 2025 ... is a member of the National Honor Society.

Personal:  Full name -- Camryn K. Budzik ... born on November 5, 2007, in Oxford, Mich. ... daughter of Michael and Beth Budzik ... father played football at Hillsdale College ... has a younger brother, Ben, and a younger sister, Peyton ... plans to major in Physician Assistant Studies.

Sabrina Gaul, 5-6, F, Troy, Mich. / Troy [Michigan Hawks]

 Will be a 2026 graduate of Troy High School ... will be a four-year letterwinner for coaches Tony Casali (2026) and Dan Troccoli (2023-24-25) ... helped THS to an Oakland Activities Association (OAA) Red Division title as a sophomore as well as a district championship ... guided the Colts to a 24-8-5 mark in 2024 and 2025 combined, including five playoff wins ... scored the game-winning goal in a 2025 2-1 win over Royal Oak ... voted to both the 2024 and 2025 Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association Division 1 All-State Honorable Mention team ... will be a two-year team captain ... is a member of the National Honor Society ... earned Academic Honor Roll recognition ... spent the summer of 2025 with Troy City WFC ... selected to the 2023-24 ECNL U16 All-Regional League - Heartland Region, while playing for Liverpool FC IA Michigan.

Samantha Powers, 5-5, D, Grand Ledge, Mich. / Grand Ledge [Nationals]
High School:  Will be a 2026 graduate of Grand Ledge High School ... will earn her fourth varsity letter for coach David Blanzy ... helped the Comets to a 12-4-2 record as a junior and first place in the Capital Area Activities Conference (CAAC) Blue Division with a 5-0-1 mark ... received Division 1 Honorable Mention All-State accolades in 2025 from the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association ... selected team MVP each of the last two seasons ... named to the CAAC All-League Blue Division team in both 2024 and 2025 ... will be a four-year CAAC All-Academic honoree, and a three-year team captain ... is a member of the National Honor Society and the Academic Honor Roll.

Personal:  Full name -- Samantha Z. Powers ... born on June 28, 2008, in Grand Ledge, Mich. ... daughter of Andy and Beth Powers ... has an older brother, AJ ... plans to major in Nursing.

The Warriors will begin their inaugural season in August of 2026.
