Women's Soccer Signs Inaugural Recruiting Class

This is the first of multiple stories on the 2026 recruiting class.

DETROIT -- Doug Steinard, the inaugural head coach for the Wayne State University women's soccer program, has announced his first Warrior recruiting class.  This is the first of multiple recruit stories over the next couple of weeks.

These four high school seniors will enroll at WSU in the fall of 2026 and be members of the squad for the inaugural season in program history.

Becoming Warriors are midfielders Emma Angus (Linden, Mich.) and Morgan Koskinen (Waterford, Mich. / Waterford Mott), along with forwards Lola Battaglia (Almont, Mich.) and Ellie Whalen (Commerce Township, Mich. / Pontiac Notre Dame Prep).

"We are very excited about our very first recruiting class," remarked coach Steinard.  "It is a group of great kids with lots of talent, character, and commitment.  We believe they will help us compete in our first year of the GLIAC.  The class is a balanced group of players who have a lot of experience playing at a high level, and we're confident they'll make an immediate impact on and off the field as we continue to build our program's foundation."

Emma Angus, 5-3, MF, Fr., Linden, Mich. / Linden [Nationals]
High School:
 Will be a 2026 graduate of Linden High School ... will be a two-year varsity letterwinner for coaches Kevin Fiebernitz, Mary Berry and Nathan Ellis ... named to the 2025 All-Flint Metro League Honorable Mention team ... served as a team captain.

Club Team:  Nationals.

Personal:  Full name -- Emma C. Angus ... born on February 18, 2008, in Cape Coral, Fla. ... daughter of Shawn and Shannon Angus ... has an older brother, Logan ... plans to major in Criminal Justice.

Lola Battaglia, 5-7, F, Fr., Almont, Mich. / Almont [Nationals]
High School:
 Will be a 2026 graduate of Almont High School ... will be a four-year letterwinner for coach Mike Kepler ... scored 47 goals, while assisting on 17 others for the Raiders in 2025 ... voted to the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association Division 3 All-State First Team as a junior after earning Third Team accolades in 2024 ... selected as the Blue Water Area Conference (BWAC) Offensive MVP in 2025 ... notched a hat trick vs. Williamston in a regional semifinal contest ... tallied the game-winning goal against Frankenmuth in the regional championship game ... totaled 92 goals over the last two seasons (2024 and 2025) on the varsity at AHS ... serving as a team captain this spring (2026) ... helped the Raiders to a 46-13-5 overall mark during her first three years, including a 35-3-4 record in the BWAC ... AHS won a BWAC league title in 2024, and finished as the runner-ups the other two seasons ... also competed in volleyball, track and powerlifting for AHS ... won the 200m dash and finished second in the 100m dash at the 2024 MHSAA Division 3 regional track meet to qualify for the state meet in both events (ran a personal-best 26.65 at the state meet) ... ran the anchor leg on the regional championship 4x100m relay, and the third leg on the runner-up 4x200m relay ... won her weight class at the 2024 Junior Varsity State Powerlifting Meet with a total of 710 pounds ... is a member of the Academic Honor Roll.

Morgan Koskinen, 5-4, MF, Fr., Waterford, Mich. / Waterford Mott [Liverpool]
High School:  Will be a 2026 graduate of Waterford Mott High School ... will be a four-year letterwinner for coach Kevin Tapchom ... helped the Corsairs claim to the 2025 Lakes Valley Conference title with an 11-2-4 overall record (6-1-3 LVC record) ... received Honorable Mention All-State accolades in both 2024 and 2025 from the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association ... tied for the LVC lead in assists (6) and tied-for-second in goals (5) as a junior ... also competed in golf, basketball and flag football at WMHS ... served as a soccer team captain for multiple years, and was the golf team captain as a senior ... was a two-time All-LVC selection in golf and earned All-Region recognition in 2025 ... qualified for the MHSAA Division 1 state finals as a senior.

Personal:  Full name -- Morgan Koskinen ... born on June 24, 2008, in Commerce, Mich. ... daughter of Mark and Trudi Koskinen ... has an older sister, Karli ... Karli is currently a freshman midfielder for Michigan Tech ... is undecided on academic major ... last name is pronounced KOSS-kin-en.

Ellie Whalen, 5-10, F, Fr., Commerce Township, Mich. / Pontiac Notre Dame Prep [Michigan Jaguars]
High School:  Will be a 2026 graduate of Pontiac Notre Dame Prep ... will be a four-year letterwinner for coach Jim Stachura ... received Division 3 All-State Honorable Mention recognition as a junior from the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association ... also competed in volleyball and basketball for NDP ... earned All-Academic recognition multiple years in all three sports ... served as a team captain in all three sports ... recorded over 200 career kills, 33 service aces and 46 blocks (11-35) for the Fighting Irish volleyball squad ... averaged over five rebounds and two steals per contest as a junior, while playing in all 22 games for the basketball team.

Club Team:  Michigan Jaguars.

Personal:  Full name -- Ellison C. Whalen ... born on February 22, 2008, in Royal Oak, Mich. ... daughter of Patrick and Laurel Whalen ... father played football and ran track at Albion, while mother played basketball ... father was inducted into the Albion Hall of Fame in 2025 ... has an older brother, Colin, and two younger sisters, Jocelyn and Gillian ... brother is a freshman basketball player at Albion ... plans to major in Education.

The Warriors will begin their inaugural season in August of 2026.
