Another Meet, Another School Record For Women's Indoor Track

WSU's DMR breaks school record.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- A few members of the Wayne State University women's indoor track and field squad competed on Saturday at the GVSU Big Meet Saturday.

The Warriors DMR (Distance Medley Relay) broke the school record by over 2.6 seconds clocking in at 11:44.27. The quartet consisted of senior Emily Gordon (Northville, Mich.), senior Renae Kutcha (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi), junior Rachel Felstow (Leonard, Mich. / Romeo) and graduate student Taylor Hopkins (Sanford, Mich. / Meridian [Northwood]).

"This meet can be a downer or a huge boost going into championship season, and it was absolutely the former this time around. We competed at a really high level across the board.

"The 4x400 team got into the fastest heat in a loaded meet, and they really held their own. Elyse (Miller) and Renae in particular ran really strong relay legs. Elyse had an excellent day overall, with fast times in the 60n and 200 meter dashes as well.

"Emily had a massive breakthrough in the 800, and that race was years in the making. She executed her race perfectly and had a dominating win over a competitive heat. Her time was well under the WSU outdoor 800-meter record as well as a new indoor record.

"Reagan (Justice) has had a tough time with illnesses over the past few indoor track seasons, and she ran one of her toughest races ever on Friday. Great effort for her to break another school record.

"We had good races from Avery Wilson, Anna Gdowski, and Hanne Bastiaansen as well. It was a good way to keep positive momentum going into GLIACs in a couple of weeks.

"The distance medley relay has been a premier event for our program over the past few years, along with the 4x400 relay. Our team unfortunately was placed in the slower of the two heats today, and had to run this race by themselves, so to break a school record in that situation was extremely impressive. Emily gave us a nice lead, Renae and Rachel literally never saw another runner on the track during their legs but still came through with solid runs, and Taylor ran her first sub-five minute mile with a nice anchor leg.

"Robin Bresolin also deserves a lot of credit for coming back with a big 3K PR after a PR in the mile yesterday.

"Four school records in two days is an impressive accomplishment for the student-athletes in this program."

Wayne State will compete in the SVSU Tune-Up on Friday, Feb. 21 in University Center, before returning to SVSU the following weekend (March 1-2) for the GLIAC Championships.
