Men's Tennis Set for Three Matches this Weekend

WSU will face the University of Findlay, Northwood University, and Western Michigan University.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (3-0) welcomes the University of Findlay (2-3) to the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility for its contest on Friday, February 21, with the first match set to begin at 2:00 PM.  After the home competition, the Warriors will hit the road to face Northwood University (3-3) on Saturday, February 22 and Western Michigan University (6-5) on Sunday, February 23.

VS. FINDLAY
Doug Linden is in his 12th season at the helm for the Oilers.  In his time as the head coach, Linden has guided UF to a 101-99 overall record including a 12-12 ledger during the 2022-23 season in which he was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) coach of the year with the squad earning the regular season title.

UF travels to Detroit after losing its last three spring contests, as the Oilers fell to Grand Valley State University 6-1, Ferris State University 5-2, and Cleveland State University 7-0.

VS. NORTHWOOD
NU is led by Raul Quevedo who is in his second season at the helm.  In his first campaign, the Timberwolves finished with a 6-13 overall record, with Quevedo helping them to a 3-3 mark this season.

Northwood is coming off of a 6-1 loss to Purdue University Northwest, and will host GVSU prior to its meeting with the Green and Gold.

VS. WESTERN MICHIGAN
Dave Morin is in his 25th season as the WMU head coach and holds a 419-210 ledger.  Morin has been named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year 12 times (1994, 1998, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2019) and is a member of the WMU Hall of Fame.

The Broncos will face Butler University, PNW, and Eastern Illinois University prior to hosting WSU.

LAST TIME OUT
The Warriors return home after a 2-0 performance the previous weekend.  On Friday, February 14, the Green and Gold triumphed over Case Western Reserve University 6-1 and prevailed against the University of Northwestern Ohio 4-3.  

Due to his strong performance on the court, George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's tennis Player of the Week.  The freshman went 4-0 in his matches (2-0 in singles / 2-0 in doubles) against the Spartans and the Racers.  When facing CWRU, Day along with his partner Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) collected a 6-3 win in the No. 1 doubles position.  In singles, the Warrior prevailed 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 2 position.

Against UNOH, Day and Drenth continued their success in doubles, this time winning 6-2.  The freshman saw action in the No. 1 position in singles and did not miss a beat, posting a 6-4, 6-2 win.
